Hi all

Thinking of getting a 4x4 jeep. Will be using it for 50% town driving, 25% for motorway and 25 for off road.

Which ones are the best in reliability, parts, DIY serviceability? Mpg is not too concern due to not doing too much mileage.

Saw Mitsubish Shogun SWB, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Suzuki Vitara anwd Jimmi.

Any thoughts, ideas or advice would be much appreciated. Thansks

Thats quite a range of vehicles, the best off roader is the Jimny, but its quite space hopperish on road and gets blown about a bit on Motorways.

Vitara depends hugely on what age of vehicle you are looking at. The more modern ones are akin to RAV4s rather than off roaders. The early ones are suffering from old age.

Grand Cherokee is huge in comparsion. Lovely on the motorway but can be a bit big for green lanes and town centres.

Shogun SWB, in V6 Evo form, perfect for all situations.

I used to have an old Vauxhall Frontera a few years ago, and it was a good car both on motorways and towns. But I had never taken it to off road. It was such a practical car able to load lots of stuff in the back too.

So Suzuki and CG is not too practical althoguh good in their own ways.

My mate had a Mitsubish shogun, and I recall when we were driving to the north for work on motorway, and it drove like train.
 
Series Land Rover with galvanised chassis, single leaf springs and a modern engine.

Something less radical but good will take a while to find and wont be cheap. But they don't depreciate. The old petrol and diesels are slooow and the springs don't do much springy stuff, so get something that been updated.

Same underpinnings as the (frankly ugly) fat 500 Large but should be reliable.

A friend had a mid 1990s Frontera. Uninspiring, fuel consumption was abominable and then the engine threw a con rod or something equally terminal. No Thanks.
 
The Landrovers would be great, but they tend to be rather pricey every time I spot one for sale.

My Frontera was great first couple of years, then EML light came on. Then it started to run rough, and then blue smoke came out from the exhaust.

It started cutting out on bends and hills.

I think thats when I took it to a dealership, and traded it in for a new Panda. That was 2010 autumn.
