Looks like Seval have got to up there game to compete ..!!!

Ford has shoehorned the 10-speed automatic gearbox from a Mustang into the more humble Transit van. According to the American manufacturer, the new transmission is designed to minimise fuel costs for owners by allowing engines to operate in the most efficient way.

By providing 10 ratios, Ford claims the gearbox can help the engine operate at speeds closer to peak efficiency, while the adaptive shift scheduling system is designed to adapt the point at which gear shifts are made to suit the conditions. There’s clever technology in the clutch, too, which is supposed to make gear shifts faster and smoother, improving vehicle performance.

Offered on rear-wheel-drive Transit vans with Ford’s 168 bhp 2-litre EcoBlue HDT diesel engine, the gearbox originally developed for the Ranger, F-150 and Mustang has been tweaked to suit the Transit’s characteristics. The new transmission was then subjected to “intensive” performance and durability testing to ensure suitability for heavy-duty use in commercial vehicles before it went on sale.

Because the gearbox allows a towing weight of up to 2,800 kg, Ford says the new models will be “ideal” for construction businesses, as well as utility companies or events firms who frequently tow equipment. And the company says the “simple operation” of the automatic transmission will appeal to heavier conversions such as emergency response vehicles, mini-coaches, and larger motorhomes because drivers of such vehicles can be “less experienced” with such large vehicles and operating in stop-start traffic.

Ford ....that well know maker of reliable vehicles.....;-)

If the engine doesn't go wrong .....if the tech works and doesn't need constant software updates ....

Transit many years ago was a reliable if poorly built van however.... like the Japs did to the British motorcycle industry Ford has been left well behind other LGV manufactures

Have you driven a recent Transit ? the throttle response is all over the place , the doors crack and fall off , the engines fail ...... Seval have their issues but are better built and certainly the Iveco engined versions are pretty bomb proof .

I agree , i have'nt owned a transit since the 70,s eventually replaced the wheezing v4 with a 3lt v6 capri engine ...thats better ..!!

Ford have never got to grips with corrosion issues and sorted the rotting wheel arches , rust ridden steps , and thats a good a good one .

I have now had 3 boxers with the puma engine the current 2014 is behaving it self ,the other 2 were piles of dung , one of which just decided to die on a Spanish motorway , when taken apart all the rings had stuck in the pistons , total rebuild. the 2.2 is a rev happy gutless engine unlike my old ducato with the Sofim lump ...

Got various friends running transits , one is heavy machinery tech , always having transmission and drive line problems [ RWD models ], i drive a recent one on odd occasions, nasty thing to use , everything is so cheaply made and flimsy , made to last just long enough to see the warrant out ..then you are on your own with big bills looming ..!!

I would be good money that any savings in 'efficiency' are lost ten fold in maintenance and failure over the life of a commercial vehicle hauling 3 tonnes. It's hard enough to get an indie to overhaul a 5 speed box with a 10 speed any problems you'll be going to Ford and bending over.

I assumed the very latest Transit must be fantastic because Motorhome Monthly Magazine seems to rave about.

Then a few months ago we had to rent a LWB Hi top van in work, which we do about once a month. The hire company usually send us a new hi top XLWB Merc van, but on this occasion they sent a new Transit. I had to take it on quite a long journey. I was very unimpressed, the engine seemed coarse and a bit noisy.

If you can afford a motorhome based on the new Merc then go for it, but otherwise I will stick with a Ducato thanks.....
