the main centre system ilumination has gone, is it a bulb or a led,anyone done this job

as far as i know there is a luminescent tube behind the screen with an inverter to generate the high voltage.

That's right.
The most common problem is the power supply to the inverters ribbon cable coming out of its connector. Simply take the front off and push it back in.
Next most common fault is a failed tube.
