I have the auto gearbox light flashing and the car was in emergency drive mode(max 20mph). Took it to auto gearbox specialist who managed to lose the drive altogether.

looked at wiring into ECU and repaired some chaffed wires, now got Engine Management light and code 1702/1708 on

any ideas or anybody want to buy a 51 plate sporting speedgear, careful lady owner, just a knackered gearbox

dont normally get codes or waning lights if box is knackered. normally if the warning light is on its can be fixed

P1702 Connector lamp from A/T

P1708 Secondary pressure check

I assume the connector lamp from Automatic transmission? where is this lamp is it inside the box?

Another source states:

P1702 - TRS (Transmission Range Sensor) circuit intermittent malfunction
P1708 - Clutch switch circuit malfunction

First port of call would be any plugs/sockets around the A/T or the gearbox control unit (but I don't know what/where that is)

Those all look like the sorts of things you'd expect from chafed/broken wires. Fix the wiring, clear the codes and see what happens.

i looke at the wires going into ECU in the passenger footwell and all ok, wires going into white connector on front of gearbox looked good also. I have read that this gearbox has its own ECU? do you know where the ECU is located

thanks will check that and also whilst trawling through the many threads on auto gearbox problems it was said the rear light cluster earth has often caused similar symptoms...I have had both light clusters off and cleaned the multiway connector but could not locate the main earth point, do you know which side of car this is located?

I am trying to test everything because last time I had similar problems the local FIAT main dealer recommended a new/replacement gearbox costing £750 +VAT and problem turned out to be chaffed wires in ECU which is why I checked this before. Of course I did not get money back

the dodgy earth problem dont normally affect the way the car drives just the display on dash and reverse beaper on when not in reverce and you hear the gear leaver lock clicking on and off when it shouldnt be when you brake when driving, not sure what you mean by "emergency drive mode" but if car is not changing up it can be a speed sensor fault

the Emergency Drive mode is where the car is limited to max speed of 20mph and sort of stays in 1st gear only - limp home mode

the speedo was working but since I took it to the garage the car has lost all drive now so cannot tell

the speedo was working when I had drive on the car but since I took it to a "gearbox Specialist" and he F..... around the car doesnt have any driove now so I cannot tell

Dave you may be my hero!

I have started a thread about this same problem - My gearbox light has come on and is flashing and I also hear the click everytime I press my break. I dont have the beeping problem though. How do I go about finding the earth cable and replacing it myself or is it a book it in with Fiat job? If so how much am I looking at as I'm really worried about getting charged a fortune, havn't heard any great news about Fiat repair costs!

you take rear lights out clean the plug and connectors and it normally clears it. normally only have to do the light on the side with reverse light

Brilliant thanks very much, do I need to do it on the actual gearbox itself too?

Will maybe have a try of this tonight, if not tomorrow and will post back with some pictures on what I did and the end result as it seems a common problem which is quite tricky to find out the cause.
