Technical mk1 MOT Failure - Advice please

No airbag ecu no warning light? Unless the light is controlled else where and the body computer can tell the airbag ecu is missing?

What ever the case you're going to have to replace what broke

Fit decent steering wheel, (thus binning airbag) and remove airbag bulb. Nothing to test, so no light needed.

Removal of airbags is now cause for failure as well, if it was fitted from new then it has to be there and has to work

My guess is that for a Mk1 they'll have no record as to whether one was fitted or not (just as often as they'll have no reliable info as to whether ABS was fitted on a car of that era). But check it out with the MOT centre first.

how much of a job is putting on a new steery? (is this a job for a pro given the importance of the steery)
and a rough guide to a price for one?

Easy enough. Lots of wheels in Demon Tweeks, Halfords, RallySport, etc. You'll need a boss to suit the Punto Mk1.

The trick is to have the wheels pointing straight when you fit it. Seriously. Drive it in a straight line before you pull the wheel off. Haynes describes it all.
