I purchased my 60 plate Punto Evo a year ago, and about 6 months ago a 'problem' started to occur.

It seems to happen randomly when driving. Doesn't happen all of the time, just occasionally. Basically;
-there is a loud fan noise, despite the heaters being turned off, sounds like something over-revving/heating coming from the front of the car.
-the instant MPG drop below 40
-stop/start becomes unavailable

Has anybody else had this problem, or have any idea what it could be?!

Thanks

hi, what engine..??,
maybe air con coming in..??,

need more info I'm afraid..,
ever had any warning lights on..??,

Charlie - Oxford
Hi Charlie,

it's a 1.3 diesel multijet 75bhp

the air con wasn't switched on anytime this problem has occurred so we hadn't really thought of relating it to that.

Never had any warning lights on no.

Beth

The best you have to do is check if engine fan kicks in, to be sure.
After you have to determine why...

Be careful with your hands if fan is running !!

I wonder if it's the Radiator Fan kicking in, Does the temp gauge show a slight increase when it happens?
Not that I have noticed, but I'll certainly keep my eye out next time it happens because I have already had this suggested to me...
Sounding likely that this could be the problem. Easy fix?

DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF)

(for versions/markets where provided)

The Diesel Particulate Filter is a mechanical filter, inte-

gral to the exhaust system, that physically traps particu-

lates present in the exhaust gases of diesel engines.

It is needed to eliminate almost all particulates in compli-

ance with current/future legislation.

During normal use of the vehicle, the engine control unit

records a set of data (e.g. travel time, type of route, tem-

peratures, etc.) and it will then calculate how much par-

ticulate has been trapped by the filter.

Since this filter physically traps particulate, it should be re-

generated (cleaned) at regular intervals by burning the car-

bon particles.

The regeneration procedure is handled automatically by

the engine control unit according to the filter conditions

and vehicle use conditions.

During regeneration, the following may occur: a limited in-

crease in the engine speed, activation of the fan, a limited

increase in fumes and high temperatures at the exhaust.

These are not faults; they do not impair vehicle perfor-

mance or damage the environment.

If the dedicated message is displayed,

Think that sounds just about spot on. I presume this explains why the MPG drop and the stop start becomes unavailable.

Thanks!

I have also experienced this with my multijet sporting. Kind of assumed it was a re-gen. Getting same symptoms as Beth except drop in mpg.
My car did it again today - I've decided to log it and if it keeps occurring quite regularly I'm going to find out if there is a problem with it.
I left my car to run this morning after it started and after about 5 minutes it stopped doing it
