im looking for a 80s or early 90s car, with low insurance, so something around a 1.6L engine, capable of fitting 4 comfortably, or 2 and a good amount of storage space (enough for 2-3 guitar cases)

ive looked at mk1-2 polo's, mk1-2 caddy pickups, mk2 escorts, bmw 5 and 3 series (e30 or something i cant remember) so just looking for some more suggestions,

i like the escort and bmws but insuring is going to be too expensive (im 18 years old and thanks to chavs thrashing them around, insurance for under 21s in them is ridiculous)

all help is much appreciated

1.3 Mk2/3 escorts shoulnt be too bad on the insurance and are great fun to drive.

I have to ask why are you looking for cars older than yourself. They will be similar price to cars 8-10 years old, and as you said the only desirable ones can be insurance raping.

majority of 80's/90's cars will have been px'ed in the scrappage scheme

Those that are still around will either be battered or shown in shows therefore not cheap to buy

i want to go older purely for the fact that i prefer them, i cant say i prefer the 90s polo to the 80s polo, or the latest escort to the mk2 escort, the older cars just are much more simple, better to drive, and look the tits,

i found one tipo and two tempra's, i must say im not liking them hah, thanks for the suggestion, i couldnt find any 80s fiats which are saloons, or similar, which i like,

is there anything with the likes of vauxhall? or other fords like the sierra which is worth looking at?

[edit]

maddogmorg i do actually like your tipo, insurance would probably be high for 18 year old thoughh

problem with older cars is RUST. Few cars were galvanised, and production methods weren't always the best. even some newer cars weren't properly protected, mk1 focus' for example which is crazy.

Another problem is carburettors which were fitted to lots of cars pre-92. Excellent when running right, but they often need regular tuning. and if you can't do that yourself you might find expensive. but generally if it's fine to start with little adjustment is needed

electric windows were rare, heaters not always the best, heavy steering, engines are often rougher compared to newer cars. without a sunroof it'll be too dark, with a sunroof it WILL leak. also will need regular maintenance and replacement of engine ancilliaries and suspension components due to age/wear.

On the plus side driving is much more rewarding and they often look better.

but slightly newer cars, newly designed in very late 80s onwards have a lot more in common with modern cars, but share the handling of older less sophisticated cars, untill weights rocketed up due to crash protection.

im definitely keeping my eye out for rust anyway, i fail to see the point in a car having the 'rat' look, i mean seriously? do people think that looks nice?

i have a family friend who's a mechanic and a mate whos training to be one so i can call them for advice when it comes to the carburetter,

i dont mind have manual windows, i love the look of the old muscle car interior, '67 mustang and '68 impala's with the nice window winders, i plan on styling my own interior anyways, so the sunroof wouldnt be that much of a problem,

i dont get how it would be dark without one though :S

some people might not understand why i want to get a 80s car over a 90s car, but the cars in the 90s are just so boring, they might be same price and better build quality, but you cant compare a '67 mustang to a 90s mustang, look at the mk1 cortina and look at the 90s mondeo, 80s are just more pleasant to look at it and as you said, more rewarding to drive, thats if you pick a good one

400000 cars >10 years old = majority of cars from the 80's/90's?* And that's before you start counting cars that were scraping through MOTs with welding or major work every year, SORN'd or, like my old micra, had terminal unrepairable body rot at just about every structural point. Still, someone could have saved the "classic" by offering me 2k for it......

* Autotrader currently has over 22,700 vehicles over 10 years old on it. And I reckon that's an atypical place to advertise "run of the mill cars" that old. So no huge shortage.
