Technical improving the arial

My Mk2b has the original arial that is so loose that it spends its time horizontal on the roof of the car. Radio reception is poor so I'm wondering if iI can rplace it with something better, or failing that, at least tighten it up so it stays at a 45° angle?

the base on these crack which is why its so loose, if you replace the base and get the aerial more upright then you'll find the signal will improve 10 fold
