Re the OP's question, another vote for leather wipes of some description. I bought an orange pack from Halfords, claim to have some kind of wax or oil in them, seem to do a nice job on the seats/gear knob/steering wheel. I keep them in the car and utilise traffic jams for a quick clean.

Maybe its time to buy some retro style driving gloves !! The ones with the holes in the knuckles. Hmm I'm off to ebay....
