1972 500L: Car started easily, then bogged when I pushed the throttle (a frequent problem I've been trying to fix for months). Pushed it back into the driveway, and attempted to restart it with no starter response. No sound, no lights dimming. Lifted the car, manually pushed the button on the starter with a long screwdriver while key was "on," nothing. Touched a voltmeter to the transmission case and the wire connection on the starter- 12v whether the key is "on" or not even in the car. Please tell me if this is actually supposed to happen before I spend hours tracing wires.

Yes that’s correct. The starter cable is direct from the battery. You pulling the lever applies the 12v to the starter to spin it, it’s basically a switch. All the ignition switch does is switches 12v to the ignition circuit, to the coil to be precise.
