Hey folks,

Whenever the cars steered to the left (even if it's stationary) there's a kind of clunking/thudding noise coming from the front left wheel. When it's steered to full lock it's a bit louder too. Any idea what it is? MOT is due soon. Handling is fine - just not sure what the noise is all about.

It's a V-reg Mk2 8v btw.

Cheers.

u checked for play in wheel bearings?
u say it gets louder on full lock it could may well be a cv joint

Nah i've not checked that, i wouldn't know how to tbh. The MOT is due in June and no doubt it would cheaper to get sorted before then...might see if i can get a mate to have a look at it.

Something on the front suspension is worn excessively. Ball joints are a favourite, or maybe cv's!

Clunking is most likely a track rod ball joint. Outer ones don't tend to give clunk feedback through the wheel or make much noise, inner ones often do when warm.

So what sorta price would i be looking at? And would it cheaper to get it done before the MOT?

I would recommend changin the bearing joint. Not too expensive, in Scandinavia it costs around £40.
Good luck with the MOT.
