I am gonna have a go at changing the timing belt on my 1997 Punto 1.1 Sx.

Where is the best place to get this belt and tensioner ?

Do i need any special tools ?

Thanks

Richard

Only possible some Nice deep sockets - so you can get over studs on the engine mounts (if its like mk2)

As for the Belt Work itself- Not hard
Rotate the engine before removing it - and Align the Timing marks up First
(see dave's guide in the stickies)
Then Release the tensioner and slip the belt off

To be honest - waterpumps been a suspect failure on most cars, This would now be the best time to change it - as it will be exposed and the belt will already be off

But it does mean dumping the current Coolant

and Once the Belt and pump replaced - Refilling and bleeding the cooling system

Ok cheers mate.

What size of bolts is on the tensioner ?
And is the tensioner a **** about to set the belt tension ?

I'll google Andrew Page ;)

Do at least replace the tensioner at the same time.

I will be, for all it costs :D
All i need is a nice day now.

Mine was a 13mm spanner fitting, just needed 2 m6 bolts and a long screw driver to tension it up, good engine to do a cam belt on as if you cock it up it wont bugga the engine.

Ok no worries

Screwdriver to stop it moving ???

Lol at not being able to **** it up :D

No screw driver to apply tension on the 2 m6 bolts as the tensioner has 2 m6 holes in it

Re: Punto mk1 problem with electronics

I was told at college that On the longest part of the belt that the tensioner is not on make sure you can twist the belt no more than 90 degrees each way. I have allways just done it my own way and not had a belt slip or brake yet.

Re: Punto mk1 problem with electronics

Get the Haynes manual and read the Punto Guides or someone will be back very soon asking why:
  • his inlet manifold is split
  • his car just stopped in the fast lane
  • his head gasket blew
  • etc
Do it properly with correct tools and correct parts or let a garage do it.

With cam belts change - the belt, the tensioner and if its old change the water pump. Anything less is false economy.
