Black flap under car at side of wheel

Hi

Just bought a 2007 grand punto and very happy with it.

However, i notice when I look under the car there seems to be a black hard plastic protective flap at the side of the wheel.

This seem quite noticeable and when i was driving in my other car in front i could see this when looking in the rear mirror when my wife was driving the punto.

Does anyone know what this is? It is at the side of the wheel underneath the car and looks like it could be a protective mud flap or something but cannot understand why it is so noticeable?

Think there on about the bit of the archliner that sticks out a bit further than the bumper that you can see looking straight on at the car.

I have one on mine also don't have a clue what it is for, only thing I can think of is for mechanical access if something in engine bay needs work on???

I think he is talking about the rear wheel arches, the archliners stick out a little, i have it too. No idea why but it doesnt bother me!

They all have them,I think it's just a type of mudflap to stop crisp getting in the engine maybe.
