I recently acquired a 1995 Fiat Tempra 1.9 TD saloon with only 67 k miles, needs plenty of work but I couldn't say no. Thankfully it seems a lot better corrosion wise compared to the 1992 Tipo 1.7 D I tried to save.. It's been off the road since 2009. Obvious problems are that it won't stay in first gear and being off the road that long it will need plenty of other recommissioning. It's the DGT dash SX model. Photos to follow.. Needs two front headlights which might not be too easy to get a hold of..

Photos of my Tempra.. Needs work but hopefully not beyond saving. Very rare car now in Ireland.

The gearbox issue could simply be the nylon bush at bottom of gear lever, if the Tempra had one. Sure it does. If this breaks or cracks, it can allow lever to kick out of gear. Plus check the gear linkage.
If it's been stood for ages, flush the oil and back flush radiator, and change brake fluid. Fully check the brake lines.. Buy some Vaseline, and rub into all rubbers around windows and seals, to supple the rubber.
I had both the Tipo version, and Tempra. Went to Italy and back in the Tipo, and on the way back through France, was running well over 100 mph with ease. Great cars, and vastly underated
Oh, just remembered. There is a wire that runs from the diesel pump. It can crack, and immobilise the car.

Thanks for the helpful advice, I will probably change the radiator and thoroughly flush the cooling system.. It's very brown looking. The car will require some welding at the rear of the near side sill and I don't like the look of the sunroof frame but I'm not worried about that at the moment. It's rough if you compare it to surviving UK cars but I would rather attempt save it than not. I will overhaul the braking system and change the timing belt etc when funds allow.

His SW looks positively mint compared to my heap! Might have to drive it 'a la patina' when I do get the repairs completed! Are you loving the digi dash or the mould?! Should really have hooked the battery up for the photos. It badly needs the glow plugs changed too, only one working so a bit of a pig to start at the minute. Sounds sweet when running though.

the weekend / SW that Palio bought last year needed welding in a similar place IIRC,

loving the dash..

Welding? Pah! Nope not needed so far, but that was mainly because we didn't want to remove half the arch and sill area to do it properly....

We actually cleaned it up, treated & sealed it, then covered it. There was nothing structural needing welding, but it is a problem area which will cost real money to resolve properly long term. The car is not worth big money, so the preservation method was used. ;)

Well I have various tipo carcasses for cuts so might cut out and replace the rust but at the same time I don't want to get completely bogged down with it. Next problem is to find some time to get started on it which entails getting the car to where I currently live.. At least the evenings are getting brighter!

Stephen. I salute you. Glad people like you are prepared to put the man hours in, to preserve a car, that is getting quite rare. Well done that man.
The main things like brakes, were pretty uniform, across the Fiat/Lancia/Alfa range, so parts are plentiful still.
Iam running a mk 2 Lancia Delta, here in Spain. Lots of parts etc, used on the Mk 1 Brava/Bravo. Different rear end though. I use it as a 'Campo' car in the mountains.

Hi stephen79.

Nice looking tempra. Had one a few years ago, and it was an absolute bullet.

It was the same model as yours. I have a few parts that will suit, namely good rear lights.

I'll check to see what else is there, and get back to you when I know more.

I'm based in the midlands, Tullamore in offaly. Anywhere near???

I don't want anything for the parts. Just nice to see a real classic being looked after.

Chat soon.

John.

Nice. The old TD is one splendid engine. Every time I drive another diesel I am reminded  I had a look at your Tipo thread recently and as you say that 1.7 body was too far gone. Maybe you'll maybe need do some remedial protection works on this one before you start using it in anger.

Thank you all for your kind words, Jonti, Murfman and sumplug. John/Murfman I am living in Portlaoise and pass Tullamore 5 days a week so if you have few parts I would be more than appreciative and won't see you stuck for a few bob! I haven't done anything to the Tempra yet as its not at my house it's stored some 60 Km away at present. Hopefully I I'll get cracking at it over the summer so in the meantime I will start the good old shopping list of parts!

Hi stephen79,

That's grand. I root around the garage to see if I come across any more parts.

Then we can arrange to meet up in Tullamore.

Chat you soon.

John.
