Hi guys, havent posted in a while cause the car has been fairly reliable up until now :(
Had the brakes fail in traffic which was put down to a bad vacuum pump. Ok ordered the new pump and it arrived last week. Today the mechanic calls and says that the camshaft has failed (melted slightly) and that this was the root of the problem, probably the reason also why the performance and economy was so crap.
Now the real problem begins, he said that the camshaft is very specific to the engine and quite difficult to find the right one. I've got a 1995 Fiat Tempra 1.9TD and I found a camshaft for a Fiat Tipo 1.9D so no turbo. Are these camshafts the same? or are the camshafts for all the Tempras the same?
Many thanks and I hope you guys can help with solving this huge dilemna

I know very little about this, so please shoot me down in flames if necessary, but wasn't this TD engine fitted to early Mareas? I have driven a 97 P Marea with a TD100 engine, not a JTD.

The TD engine in the Marea is not related, it is a newer design sharing most of its components with the 1910 JTD. From the little I can remember of suffering the same cam failure in my 91 Tempra TDS I understood that the cam was modified in later production with a stronger vacuum pump drive. It is therefore likely that later cams are interchangeable between Tipo/Tempra/Dedra and any other cars using the same spec unit.
Vans using the same 1929 turbo unit may have a different cam profile I believe.

i might have a spare camshaft for one. i had mine welded and repaired. as mine did the same thing shearing the vacuum pump end off . so i bought a new pump and had the shaft repaired but now i have spare parts and engines i might find a cam somewhere. but it is repairable

Hi,
shame it broke 18MONTHS AGO..,
or he may be able to use it,

atmo tipot's were 1.7 in the UK , and the 1929's were turbo - possibly MK2's cam's were uprated to suit HOOGE TURBO,

Charlie
