lately the engine oil warning light has been coming on whilst the car has warmed up and the engine is idling. As soon as i hit the gas pedal, it goes off and as soon as i am idling again, it's on! Anyone knows what it could be? The oil is clean and there is amount as requested.

Thanks y'all,

Sounds like low oil pressure at idle.

What mileage has the engine done?

When engines get old the gaps on the bearing shells/journals increase. This allows the oil to flow more freely past the shells but this then means that the oil pressure is lower untill/unless the pump speed is increased.

Could also be the signs of a worn oil pump.

There is a remote possibility the oil pressure sender switch has worn and it now requires a higher oil pressure to energise it or possibly the associated oil way is partially blocked.

Standard oil pressure switches trigger at around 6psi. Higher rated switches can be obtained and are often fitted to track/racing cars to give early warning of oil surge issues.

You could try replacing the oil pressure switch and/or fitting an oil pressure guage. If you still have problems then it is probably just general engine wear and you have some decisions to make.

Your options are:

a) live with it IF there is reasonable oil pressure once the engine if off idle (pressure guage required to make this decision)
b) investigate the pump & bearing situation
c) use a thicker oil. You probably have 10W40 oil at the moment ( or possibly a 5W40). You could go to 20W50. Fiat/Lubrificanti do the HPX oil (20W50) which they recommend for older cars and old high mileage engines.
