(T) Tempra 2.0 1996 fuel pump problems?

My Tempra keeps dying on my with no warning. The engine just stops, usually when it is slowing down coming up to traffic lights. You then have to wait 3 or 4 minutes before it will start up again. It started off occasionally but now it's several times a day.

I live in France and the mechanic reckons its the fuel pump inside the petrol tank. He says that he is unable to get this part in France, he also mentioned another part, called (in French) a 'Bobine Allumage' which is connected to the fuel pump. I'm not sure what this is although allumage means lighting (as in lighting a candle). He can't get this part in France either.

I do have trust issues with him as I have just paid him 180 euros to fix the problem which obviously he didn't, so I would like to know if anyone has any ideas. Also where to get parts.

I did read an earlier thread in which similar problems seemed to be caused by the breather. However, removing the fuel cap doesn't resolve the problem so I don't think the breather is the cause.

Would be grateful for any advice.

Bobine d'allumage is the ignition coil. The only way that would be connected to the fuel pump is via a fuel pump relay designed to cut off the fuel pump in the event of an accident. However I would suspect that a 1996 Tempra would have an inertia switch instead of a relay.

If your car does have the relay, it is likely to be the cause of your problem. There was a common problem with them that caused intermittent cutting out. They suffered with a "dry joint" on the small printed circuit board inside. If your mechanic is familiar with electronics, it would be easy to re-solder the "dry joint" otherwise replace the relay.

Hopefully, someone else on the forum, more familiar with the Tempra will advise if it has the relay and where it is in the car.

Used to have a Tempra 1.8ie, probably well close to the 2.0ie. One problem that they were also know for is the air bypass regulator value that adjusts the engine idle speed, often leading to poor idle, stalling, hunting and in some cases over reving.

This bypassed valve is known to 'coke up' (get clogged) and lubriation and flushing with WD40 or other light oil was always part of my service schedule.

Also there was a Fiat technical bulleting about how to correctly adjust the static air bypass set-screw to set the base idle revs. Original factory/service setting information was wrong.

Have a Tempra 1.6 and once after starting, it simply died out. Fault was the fuel pump inside the fuel tank. Not a big hussle to replace and managed to find a replica of it (not original FIAT part).

I dont supose you have the bulletin do you Nick?

My parents one suffers from occasional hunting/overreving & non starting for no apparent reason despite having a new idle valve (fitted by Fiat).
