Ok so which winter tyres should i go for? Are there some really good brands out there? Any recommendations? Tyre size is 195/55/15.

Or even all season tyres, will run Toyo Proxies the rest of the yr on 205/50/15 but as its damm cold and the Proxies are poor on the snow i'm looking for something to run in the Snow in the months ahead.

I ran the Toyo Snowproxs a few winters ago on my Mk3 Golf GTi...they were fine...good on frost and snow.

Last year, I tried to run Toyo T1-Rs...big mistake!
215/40/16 T1-Rs in snow = can't get out of the driveway!

This year I'm on Pirelli SnowSports (as I couldn't get Toyos in 205/45/16) and thus far, they are fine too.
Not tried them on snow yet...but good in the frost. Very good in fact.

Where'd you get them from, all my local places want an arm and a leg and mytyres cant do an online price for them on 195/55/15's, or any winter tyres on 205/50/15. Can do them for the volvo. The snowproxies for £46.10.

Yea its been -4oC here on and off last month and this month. Thankfully not too much snow yet, but its early worst was on New Yrs Day driving to Glasgow and noticed a mirca sliding in front of me, and in the distance a 5 car pile up! Thankfully the volvo's very nice in those conditions, even with low rubber.

But my luck and ICE anit so hot in past yrs, so want to take every measure to minimise the risk. Last bump was on 3inch thick frozen snow in Redcar nr Middlesbrough, when i was working down there. So snow chains are being bought for the HGT and winter tyres, as have another set of alloys too, as snow chains wont go on my alloys if i put 205/50/15's on, and i want that option for when i go climbing in Glencoe etc.

I got them fron Checkpoint in Aberdeen.

I think my 195/50/15 Toyos were just over £100 fitted a couple of years ago.

The 195/40/16 Pirellis (I put 205/40/16s in the last post...but they aren't...I've just remembered - getting old you see!) were about £200 fitted back in November.

I run Vredestein Snow Trac 2 on my Volvo in winter and I've been very impressed by them. They are one of the few sensibly speed rated snow tyres I could find. Their performance on tarmac is excellent, not noticeably noisier than the Michelins the car runs on in summer.

Independent test, the Goodyear Ultra grip UG 7 seems to come out best at the moment

Hello,
Take a look at the reviews on tirerack.com. Many people who have driven those tires will have rated them and that will give you the best answer.
