Took passenger side driveshaft off

Reassembled everything, but noted that it was in gear but both the front wheels still turning freely? The fault was here at this point on reassembly, but I don't know what to check for.... The replaced shaft was definately in place all the way in.

I have not touched the driver side shaft

Gently got into driver seat put it in gear wheels off the ground, gently raised the clutch with engine running, (stupid I know) clunk sound, turned off engine.

What is wrong?

Passenger side is dismantled again. But I can't see the point of pulling out the drive shaft again.

The gear stick appears to be operationg normally.
Symptom is it is permanently in neutral, even though gear stick moving as normal and clunking as normal from gear change mechanism.

Hi,
If both wheels are off the ground they will turn freely with the car in gear due to normal operation of the differential.
With one wheel held and car in gear the other wheel should not turn.

OK if that's the case I'm a dumbass,....

I notice that they are turning in opposite directions...

I did not take the driveshaft out again...so I will reassemble again and hope for the best..

thanks V much.

Robert you are a star! THANK YOU!

Been out for a test drive, and it all works good.

Stupid me over complicating everything.

Hey you are not stupid, you are learning. The operaton of a differential is not intuitive. At least you are trying and doing work on the car yourself.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid answers

Robert G8RPI.
