Hello.

After researching 67.8% of internet I have decided to write a post. Yes.

My baby Bravo 1.9 Mjet has died.
What happened you ask? Well, a few things.
Put it into reverse at home parking, i got information about ASR/ESP being not available, what quicky followed by info about faulty lights - corresponding light on dashoboard lit.

So I parked. So I switched the ignition OFF and back ON. And this time discovered the brake light does not work at all. The brake pedal is hard, I mean like reeeeaaaaally hard. And - clocks died. Neddles not moving, no backlight lights on it at all. The only working kight is from main lights. Also the mileage is displayed when I close the door so the clocks itself are fine I think.

As I was neeping through wast internet I have seen this ind of problem is quite common for whole range of Fiat cars - and in most cases caused by faulty brake light switch.
So replaced it - nothing better.
Replaced all light in rear cluster - nothing better.
Cleaned the ECU connetors, and left car unplugged on battery for 5 hours - still nothing.
Checked the battery - with engine not running it gives 12.7V, with running 13.8V - the conclusion is it is fine here.
Also read the faults codes of ECU, by ODB2 interface, this is completely clean.

I checked all the ABS sensors, electrical wise they are all identical so I recon the fault is not here.

I'm desperate now.

Any ideas ? Anyone came across similar issues?

Thank you in advance

Mariusz

Thank you. I wikk have a look at that tomorrow morning, it is already dark outside.
The other obvious thing I really have should checked is TADAMMM !!!

Fuses.

There are two of them which description more or less corresponds with the problems. Obviously if the thing in question was the replaced brake light switch it won't cure anything with blown fuses present.

Silly me.

Apologies for placing post in general tech but as I looked through internet I have seen this - or very similar issues - are happening across many Fiat models, hence the place.

Thank you and I will update tomorrow after having more work done.

It is still hard.

I didnt know the switch must be adjusted. How to do it ?

If the pedal is still hard to press then you have no vacuum.
You need to be able to press the pedal to set the brake light switch adjustment.
Does the engine start and run ok.?

SORTED OUT !!!

The brake light switch must have popped the fuse when it went.
Replaced the switch and the fuse - one of 10A's - and all is back to normal.

No adjustment on switch was needed.

Brake is normal now, engine runs OK, ASR/ESP/hillassist is back on.

Thanks everyone for help :)

Great news..!!
where was the fuse..?
near the drivers knee - or under the bonnet..??

Behind the glow box.

The position and layout of fuse box does not looks like anything I seen on net.

The only connector next to driver knee is ODB2.

Well, the car is from 2007, the schematics I have been able to find starts 2008.

And a bit of sad news anyway - this morning the fuse popped again.
When I stepped on brake pedal. The same errors appeared.

I just changed the fuse but it pops every time now when I do use a brake.
Unplugged rear clusters to exclude light bulbs, still the same.

..and here is a shy question - has anyone have got electric schematics for this car? This is 1.9MJet 16V Sport 2007.

Thanks again for your support and - honestly speaking - I do hope for more....

Mariusz

no idea on the wiring.. sorry.

worth cleaning some earth connections maybe..??

check to see what else doesn't work when the fuse is popped.. I'd expect a MOTOR to make the fuse go instantly..
ABS maybe..??

did you get to scan for errors..?? with a new fuse .. but not touching brakes..

This is the brake lights wiring diagram. Most components are obvious, but:

B002 = Dashboard Fuse Box.
E050 = Instrument Panel Warning Light.
M001 = Body Computer.

According to the wiring diagram (and the owner's handbook) the fuse (F37) should be 7.5Amp, not 10Amp.

According to the parts catalogue, Bravo uses the same brake light switch as the Stilo. It needs adjusting correctly after fitting a new one.

Thank you guys.

How to adjust the switch? Any procedure?

Error code is empty.

Thanks

How to adjust the switch? Any procedure?

While holding the brake pedal down, pull the brake switch plunger out as far as it will go. (You'll probably need a pair of long, angled nose pliers to grip it with), then raise the brake pedal slowly until it stops, you should hear a ratchet noise while lifting the pedal... Done.

Adjusting the switch is unlikely to cure the blown fuse problem. That's more likely to be a short in the wiring between pin 2 of the brake switch (I030) and pin 1 of the high level brake light.

The outer brake lights (F030 & F031) are supplied directly from the Body Computer (M001) on receiving a positive signal from the switch. They are not fused.

Error code is empty.

What code are you referring to?

Just checked the tailgate light, there is a shortcut there.

Tomorrow I will strip the boot lining and will check again. Than cut off the cables and pull in new ones.

Hopefully this will sort out the problem.

Thank a lot again, this is a small knowledge mine :)

And of course when I asked about where the brake lights were mounted I had completely forgotten about the high level brake light which for any car with a tail gait (as opposed to a saloon boot) will always be mounted in the tail gate and thus be vulnerable to wire fractures and shorts.

For any 500 owners this is a common problem that Fiat (despite service dealer feedbacks to Fiat, and not doubt some warranty claims) all Fiat did/have done is supply a repair kit. It is my understanding (twelve month+ old information) they did not make manufacturing/component changes so 500s often have issues and most happen outside of warranty.

HI everyone. I'm back :)

Car was in a garage and is still not repaired. They traced the fault down to body computer. £670+VAT of FIAT. Beeeeefy.

They had an idea though but hadn't went for it. Mostly because..... You will see.

So they wanted to cut of the body computer of the fuse and rewire the rear side stop lights from high stop light, which is not controlled by BC and is directly on the fuse.

This has got some implication. They said it will affect a few other systems - ABS, ASR/ESP, hill start. And they won't do it because its simply dangerous.

Well, me being me, I'm used to drive cars without such systems, been doing that for almost whole my life - since I got the licence. This would be a temporary solution allowing me to use the car till I get hands on new BC - read it I'll save for it.

Question is how it will affect the system? Will they be just switched off or start behaving strange? Anyone has got experience in this matter?

I will try to open the BC and check insides, electronic man by education, quite outdated though. Might be smth obvious anyway.

If no just keep watching this space as I will go for rewiring - the car is off road so what the hell, I'll do it myself.

Some help though - an electric schematics would be nice, not simple diagrams but full ones with wire colours etc. It will be of great help.

Once again thank you everyone for help ideas and good words.

Mariusz

Wiring the outer brake lights to the high level brake light would result in a constant brake light failure warning on the instrument panel.

I posted the brake lights wiring diagram for you in post 11 above. Wiring colour codes are in the table below.

Thank you davren.

The warning light won't be a problem for me at all.

Will update here when the job is done.

Thas it matter if I will put in a BC from 1.9MJet 150bhp - but Dynamique not Sport?
The thing is I have tracked used set of computers, B&Me and locks with keys but the trim of the car they are from is unknown.
Only 1.9Mjet 16V is confirmed

Would save me a lot of work and money - it is £150 for lot.
