Hey guys

I've got an odd sound coming from my 100hp engine. I've only had the car a week and not noticed it before.

The only way I can think to describe it is it makes a kind of "whup whup whup" like noise.

I noticed it first time this morning when the engine was cold and idling at 1100rpm. Once the engine warmed up I couldn't hear it anymore.

However, when I just got home from work I could hear it again as it came down the revs.

I took a video and posted it on youtube...

Anyone got any ideas as to what this could be? To me it sounds like its coming from underneath the plastic cover which could suggest the cambelt? It was changed just before I got the car so I'm hoping it isn't that.

I'm still in warranty with the garage but would like to try and discover the problem before hand.

If it is a problem? maybe I'm just being paranoid? I'm guessing not though, it does sound a bit weird.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Dom

By the sounds of it the cambelt is slightly over tensioned, needs sorting or the water pump bearings will be shot. Could have cut you a deal on an '07 100hp!

Hey maggers, thanks for the quick response :)

Would this be an expensive thing to have adjusted? I only ask because the garage I bought the car from is quite a way and if its cheap then I could save money by going local.

If its pricey then I'll call the garage and make the trip over.

Ah man, I wanna ask you about that HP you could have cut me a deal on... I bet if you tell me though I'll feel sad at the price I paid for mine haha!

Probably, It's actually my sons' which he want £2000 for. Timewise on belt adjustment is about an hour, may be worth calling the place you had it from & see if they'll foot the bill at somewhere nearer to you. Y' know, if it's just had one fitted it should have been tensioned correctly.

Oof, I paid £3500 for my 07

£2000 is a bargain for such a great motor! I can't expect he'll have it up for sale for long (y)

I phoned the dealer today and they were really cool about it. They contacted the garage that fitted the cambelt, who then contacted me. Got it booked in on Tuesday.

I've emailed them the youtube link so will see what happens.

Really appreciate the help maggers, i'll let you know how it pans out.

Lazy little sod hasn't advertised it yet, it's stuck out the back at the garage I work at - I think he expects muggins here to sell it! £3500 is about the right ballpark for a dealer price although the sales pitch we do work for has had one at £4100 for the last 6 months with no takers!
I've got to fit the self same belt tomorrow on a Punto Sporting I've just bought for my daughter's first car!

Haha I wouldn't be surprised! Whenever he does get his arse in gear, I hope he has better luck selling privately than I did, and tell him to keep his eye out for scams.

Yeah the Pandas out there are priced all over the place at the minute. Some really expensive, some mega cheap.

Punto Sporting! Used to really want one of those in blue! Couldn't afford it though and ended up with a mighty Vauxhall Nova SRi instead! I'm sure your daughter will love the Punto, I'm kinda jealous now!! (y)

Spooky! This one is blue & her boyfriend has a Nova! God, he had a nightmare selling his Mg ZR a while ago. Put it on Scumtree, someone said they wanted it and would Paypal the full price plus a transport fee which they asked him to pay to the recovery firm direct. Turned out it was a scammer from Ukraine!

Haha that is spooky!

The blue punto sportings are great looking motors. There's a guy near me with one and he proper looks after it. It's always cleaned and waxed and looking like new.

Her boyfriend will be jealous of the Punto's looks I'm sure, but god I loved my Novas haha. I had the SRi and replaced it with a GSi in the sexiest of colours... purple-silver... oh ya! haha.

Yeah mate, I had similar PayPal scams aimed at me. Quite clever in one way and I'm sure it catches people out but the lead ups are always too good to be true which always raises alarm bells. "I am happy with the price of the car and want to pay full price"... yeah right as if that ever bloody happens! Oh and you're hard of hearing are you so we can't speak over the phone, convenient, oh and you're in a wheelchair so you can't come see the car... righto luv, doesn't sound suspect at all

Or the other one "Hi I am happy with the price of your car and want to pay full price, only I'm a sailor at sea blah, blah, blah!"

My rule of thumb is "accept cash or bank transfer only" and if its a bank transfer, use internet banking to see the cash has entered your account. The PayPal scammers send you a mocked up PayPal email to confirm the money has gone in. Pretty devious!

Bit of an update on mine, the garage had it last tuesday, took the belt off and had a good look around. They couldn't find anything at fault and suggested that because the belt was brand new and had only done 200 miles, it could take some time to "bed in".

The dealer said come back in a month if its still making the same noise and they'll replace it with an official Fiat cambelt and waterpump.

Sounded reasonable to me so I accepted that and will keep my ear on it.

OK that's fair enough, at least they've had a look. The bit with the hard of hearing & wheelchair is exactly how it was plus a spoof Paypay page that showed transfer was 99% complete! Oh, and it looks like my lad's brother is having his 100HP!
