Is it a real big risk buying a fiat with the above engine? How many have detonated on there own oil due to dpf problems, etc?
Cheers

Keep to regular oil changes and pray (y)

somewhat late to the party but worth chiming in for the benefit of others in future....

All that advice above sound rather scary for someone looking to join the Fiat family

It's not all that bad in reality OP, I have a 75HP Mjet, this is what I know:

1. DPF on the 75HP was optional, not standard fitment. Mine doesn't have it.
2. Dual Mass Flywheel, as above, if optional at all. Somewhat agricultural clutch engagement when engine is cold, even with new clutch, but you get used to it and it goes away when it warms up.
3. Timing chains on some have known to fail and tensioners (made from plastic) have known to wear. As stated this is mostly because the 18K Oil service intervals stated by Fiat are way too long for any Turbo engined car. Stick with the recommended manufacturer guidelines, and you will be paying the price. Change the Oil every 9K instead and you shouldn't have any issues. Personally I do mine twice a year regardless of mileage, at sub £40 quid for an oil service I don't argue.

My Mjet has had a noisy(ish) chain since I bought it, I've have quoted £250 all in to have the Chain, Sprocket and tensioners replaced. Anyone asking more than that is either not competent at the job or taking the ****. The complete Chain kit can be sourced between £60-100 from various places.

FYI Vauxhall Corsa style mini-vans also use the same engine, allot more of those are having the chains replaced and engines rebuilt after failure, due to being work horses and not being serviced as described.

Hope this helps.
