I recently bought a GP 1.9 Sport. It was a leased car before.
It has an aftermarket button on the dash that lights up red when turned on.
I do not know what it is so I traced the wire.

It turned out there's a device under the dashboard of the brand MetaSystem.

The stickers on the device give this information:

SAT RC 06
E0600035

Meta System
03 5013
12VDC REV C

On the back there's a sticker with GSM Imei numbers, Serial Number and REV number.

I have been searching the web and found the italian and english sites of MetaSytem, but I could not find a system with these codes.

Does anyone know these devices?
And what it does?
I don't like the idead that the old owners know were the car is.

Sounds like some sort of telemetry system Given it was a lease car it is becoming more common to fit such devices and come with all sorts of technology to make your balls shrink when you realise what they can do such as location monitoring speed monitoring alerting the company if the car is involved in an accident Remote imobalisation etc they can even include covert listening equipment

I think it is probably this system http://www.metasystem.co.uk/index.php/msy_eng_en/MSYUK/Vehicle-Area/Vehicle-Telematics/MetaSAT-TVM
Or something very similar there is no telling what it can do without knowing what the company that installed it specified,

The big question is do you remove it? In all fairness you probably should for personal privacy and security but it might be quite complicated and expensive especially if it is set for imobilisation

Quick test pull the plug out of the main box and see if the car still works :)

in which case i would suspect they didn't want to admit to it, probably not good business to be spying on your customers, either way it is of very little use to you.

next port of call would be to talk to metasystems them selves and see if they can shed any light

either way pull the plug and see what happens

I pulled th plug today.
Car started a usual so I decided to remove the whole thing.

Was'nt expecting to work on it all day, and I'm still not done.
A lot of tie wraps to cut and cables to follow.

The powersource was soldered onto the big 12V line in the fuse box.
Cut it of and taped up the 12V line to make sure it won't short out or spark.

Als a cable went to the igintion barrel.
Also a crappy job there with the connect of the cable.
And quite hard to get the plastic cover of the steering column of.
Now I can;t get it back together...
But more daylight tommorow and it should be fine.

Still two cable are present they both go up high into the dashboard.
I could not reach a plug or something so I tide the up and leave them in there.

That IMEI lists the (GPRS communication) device as a cinterion Mc35i which is a basic Gsm modem with Data voice fax and SMS capabilities, for machine to machine communications. All that will be doing is feeding the information that the other services the device may have back to the people who monitor(ed) it
