I received my new wing mirror today, after the old one was fatally damaged by a white van man doing about 70 on a back road. Anyway, it came with all the electrics and fittings, I was just wondering where leccy bits go and if the whole thing is difficult to fit? The car is in the garage today getting the brake fixed so I'm just pondering it just now- looks like the wires will go into the dash? Has anyone else done this? Can't see any guides & there's nowt in the handbook. I can't imagine it would be too complicated but I'd like to have an idea how to do it so I don't take all day trying to figure it out.

What type of connection have you got on the end of the wiring on the mirrors Chris ? I think it may connect some where inside the door and then those wires would go throught the muli plug [big roung one]you can see when opening the door [only a guess here] :chin:

Hi Phil,

It's a grey 18 pin-hole plug with a locking arm on it. I had expected it just to come with the wires, but it's the full works. I can't even get to the car to nose about ( see the Kwik-Fit thread, again! ), hopefully it'll be quite simple to whip the panel off (if required) and plug it in. It's got to go either down into the door or diagnoally into the dash- hopefully it's the door so I don't have to contort myself to get it! :p

EDIT: Here's a pic of it (just found my camera)

Yeah, hopefully I'll get the car back from Kwik-Fit in time to try to fit it while there's some light to see! Not looking forward to fitting it either way, in all honesty, but wing mirrors are rather essential for safe driving! :)
Might PM Decks to ask, he seems to be a Stilo guru indeed! :worship: :p

It's just straight in through the door and the connector in your piccy goes onto the door node in the door.
door mirror electrics.JPG
P60 is the mirror motor and M66 is the door node
The Italians call the node the "telephone exchange" which is what it is i suppose

Cheers!

Just read that after I got the car back from the garage, took the remnants of the old one off and traced the wires to inside the door panel. It's too cold and dark to attempt wiring just now so the mirror is just bolted on and the wires are dangling down inside! The door panel looks like it's just clipped on at the front, though it does look screwed in the middle. Hopefully I can get enough room to get it together without having to take the whole inside panel off, but knowing my luck.... :p

"Telephone exchange", sounds ominous! Sounds like a job for tomorrow, like the painting!

I had my drive side door mirror knocked off by some kn0b in a 206, and the mirror is quite easy to dismantle and replace, but the connectors ull need to connect the connector to in your picture is in the bottom of the door and you will need to remove your inner door card to get to it! jus a heads up as it isnt a five minute job!

Oh yes! Door trim removal will be the fun part.

Look to these posts for some tips

Take some pics if you can as we could do with some of the trim and the door internals

NB make sure any wires going through grommets have the grommets correctly positioned otherwise the wire insulation gets stripped by the metal hole edges and shorts out

Very good point there made by Decks IE- Cable through grommets (y) this happened to my wife she went to her car one morning and pushed the plip and NO central locking  DEaler said its your ECU we will have to order it she put the car in when it arrived and they fitted it and the central locking still didnt work it wasnt even the fault  it was a wire that had been chaffed by the window going up and down and had blown a fuse JEES didnt they check the fuse first :bang: NO folks not Fiat here VAUXHALL :shakehead

Excellent, cheers for the heads-up 1.8 Stilo, and the info and tips Decks and Phil, I'll set about this tomorrow morning- thank God I have a laptop (& an unexpected day off work!)- think I might be taking some diagrams out with me on the screen! ;)
I'll try to take some pics, hopefully I will have time, depending on the weather here- if it's pouring as it has been so often (& is predicted tomorrow) then it's all going to be as swift as possible under a golf brolly, but if there's any time I'll do my best to take any and all pics I can!

(y)

EDIT: Is it incredibly lazy/wrong if I struggle tomorrow to just splice the wires together without taking off the panel? Depending on the weather and my mood....

Personally i wouldn't as joints are another source of resistance or shorting problems particularly around can network items like the door node

All done!
Absolutely soaked and freezing, can barely type just now- had to enlist my old man to help and use a brolly to have any hope of getting anything done! Took all the clips and bolts out from the diagram, but it felt like there was still resistance from around the handle area. Rather than pull it off & risk snapping something I managed to hold the panel out enough to contort my hand in to the clip and fit it, so the panel stayed on therefore no pictures- sorry Decks!
Everything is working now, though my Dad may never offer to help me again! Hallfrauds said they can't supply 199 paint because it contains a lead additive, my local fiat only has the pens, and a dozen local autoparts stores don't carry it either, so I have a primer-grey mirror for the time being, until I can find somewhere- even ebay seems bare!

Anyway, for anyone else attempting this:

a) be prepared to spend some time on it- maybe enlist some help- it took me about 30 mins all in- including the mirror change and fit, even though it's relatively simple.

b) watch out for resistance in the panel when you are trying to remove it, I played it safe and managed to squeeze my hand in, but my Dad (bigger hands) couldn't get near it. I wouldn't like to try to get the whole panel off, some parts on the rim are glued in places, and there are a combination of bolts, clips and screws to take off.

c) you need to lift out the control panel for the windows etc to get in at one of the bolts

Have a look at the diagrams Decks put up earlier in this post and here:

they are really useful.

Good luck to anyone else doing this, hope i don't have to do it again in the near future!
If I do, I'll have to give you a call for tips rrope!! :)

killyourmama, tell halfords they are being absolute retards!

They need to look at 199/A, 199 will be an old colour which might need the lead, but 199/A won't. Fools . . .

They did seems to be rather slow when I spoke to them! I'll get on it tomorrow. Cheers! :D :slayer:

Fantastic! I'm constantly amazed at the knowledge, abilities and helpfullness of folks on here - which reminded me to get off my *rse and donate tonight (not much but I'm skint  )
I've got (another) day off work tomorrow -think they might be trying to ease me out- so I'll get on to Halfords first thing, they can mix it up whilst I have my brekky then I'll head over to pick it up.
I've not got any indoor space to spray so not desperate just yet, need to wait for a dry, calm day in a Scottish winter- which might be difficult! Failing that I'm going to be that scary guy in the underground carpark with a makeshift face-mask, a can of paint and some hefty masking around my front wing!

Maybe it's the fact my Stilo is (almost) right, after 2 months of trying, maybe it's the Christmas music I've been downloading, maybe it's just a drug flashback, but I feel grand tonight, first time in ages. :D

Halfords say they don't have a 199/A on their computer, they have red which is a 199/something else which they said is "a reddish colour", but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?
