Hey! Can anybody help me? Please!

My car is a 2002 stilo, jtd dynamic.

Its a nice car to own and drive but the only problem is that it scrapes the bottom of the car over any sort of speed hump and even most potholes, even if they're only a couple of cm's. :yuck:
its driving me MAD!!! :bang:
Im not sure if it has been lowered or not and have only owned the car since July, could it be anything to do with broken suspension or would I notice this on general driving and handling? could it be anything to do with the fact my wheels are 17inch and the tyres are low profiles?
how would i find out if it had been lowered and is there any way of raising it up without spending too much money (if anything at all) [its xmas soon!!!!]

any ideas or info, or anybody with the same problem, would appreciate your response.

THANKS!!!!

Can you put up a pic of your car so we can see how far the body work is above the tyres ? and if its got broken springs then you will have to jack her up and investigate :) its obvious when they are broken (n)

will take pic in the daylight tommorrow (you wont see much tonight!)

my dads a mechanic(a good 1 at that, but isn't into this styling etc) he drove the car the other day and i would of thought if i hadn't noticed it (being a woman an all that!) that he would have done!

thanks for post!

Pretty sure your model should come with 16" alloys like mine. If someone has fitted new allows to it then it's a fair bet they've also lowered it :(

If you had a broken spring then I'm sure you'd notice it was lower on one side than the other not to mention it being quite noisy.

Hi,

you don't say whether you have a 3 or 5 door, the 3 door being generally lower at standard.

I have a 3 door 2002 dynamic JTD and have recently lowered it with Eibach 30mm drop springs and also have 17 inch alloys with 215/45/17 tyres.
With the diesel engine it is heavier at the front so may be abit lower than a 1.2 for example but shouldn't make it hit things:eek:

I haven't noticed anything negative since my conversion and i've driven a few different road types, my driveway entrance is very uneven also and still nothing. In fact the drive is postively glorious now i've had the 4 wheel laser alignment done...£39 quid though(n) but is worth it.

Have you looked underneath, maybe engine cover or something hanging down.
let us know(y)

Mine is an '03 Dynamic JTD and I caught the engine under tray the other night despite taking a speed hump carefully :( Noticed that both my Stilos (had a 1.6 5dr before), despite alledgedly being standard, sat/sit lower than most...

My five door has trouble with those stupid square shaped speed bumps (ie not the ones which go across the road).

I have to drive across them with two wheels over the bump to avoid grounding.

Or perhaps I should bill the council for a new sump!?!?

hi
it is a 5 door, im having problems with the camera, but should post pic soon so you boys can have a look.
they are 17inch fiat alloys, but i suppose that doesn't mean they haven't been swapped.
the car has only had 1 previous owner and knowing that she was middle age, personally i cant have seen her having swapped them or had it lowered, but you never know. will stick my head under 2moro and have a look if the engine cover is hanging down or anything.
thanks for the advice.

Isn't is to do with that piece of black plastic that hangs a couple of inches under the car?

If there's a half-hump in the road, almost guaranteed to hear it scrape. I've never really thought much of it as it's just a piece of plastic (I hope!) but I could be wrong

ta da! finally got the camera fired up and ready to roll.

heres the pic of my car, as you can all see it isn't very low looking, pretty similar to every body elses stilos ive just looked at on here (except mine's a bit dustier)

bit difficult to decide wot the problem is and im sure i would notice a suspension problem. perhaps being the jtd its just heavier and the low profiles tyres dont help it out much. mite get the nice lads down at fiat to have a quick look underneath to rule anything out.

its still doing my head in though!!!! :bang:  (n)

It looks OK in the pic (very similar to mine (y) )

As someone else has suggested, best to lay on the ground and have a good look underneath for anything hanging down or about to fall off.

You can always take it to one of these brake/tyre specialists, get them to hoist it up then you can take a close look at what's hitting the deck :)

i sometimes have a problem with scraping with my car, but only on some humps. legally humps cannot be any higher than 10 cm but the reccomendation is 7.5 cm if they are higher complain to your council.

I also have this problem with humps so I have to literally crawl over them. I have had a look under the car since doing this and the black plastic strip is damaged (scuffed) but not hanging off or anything. You just have to drive really slow over them. :bang:

hi,
new to the forum but just been reading through the thread. i too have a similar problem with catching the front end on bumps and dips in the road. i got under the car to sort some maintenance out and found that it was the engines belly pan that looked a bit scraped. don't know if this helps at all?????

Hi, I have a 1.9 JTD estate and I have exactly the same problem. Unless I crawl over speed bumps I hear a scrape and as I live near the levels in Somerset, many roads are deformed with hollows, dips and ridges which catch the underside if taken at anything but a crawl. Maybe it's because of the width of the car and a low slung engine??

Could be numerous things. Easiest to check is the undertray, make sure its all on correctly and not hanging down. Has the car being lowered at all?

Also might be worth checking your wishbone bush while its jacked up, mine used to scrape all over the shop but since i've replaced my wishbones its not scraped once
