Quote "three beeps, engine fault, sensor fault and no turbo?",

Hello boys, I hope you got your car going ok for Sunday Bozzy? If it is not still working properley, then.........

A few weeks ago, I had the same kind of problem, it felt like flat spots when accelerating, one time provided me with a lack of Turbo. My lad, well, ex now, suggested plugging it into the examiner. I checked with some of the guys on here and it seemed like a good place to start. The results showed three faults on the ECU, Super Charger boost pressure, air mass flow and something else. Anyhoo......the garage simply said, Mass airflow meter. £110 quoted just to buy the part from the garage, but I tracked it down cheaper on the internet for only £55 plus p&p. If you are still having problems, I think I will get my bum smacked (ooh er) for doing this but, I pulled the plug out of the meter thingy and the flat spots went, but when I dropped the gear and accelerated hard, I got engine fault on the display. My new mass flow meter thingy arrived today, alas I have no man on my arm to fix it for me. As far as I can tel it is held onto the air box buy two bolts and a clippy thing on a pipe to the turbo. Looks easy enough to change, failing that hopefully my daddy will help me. Now the only question I have is....... Can this ECU thing be reset without having to go back on the examiner machine and rip me off by another £50 ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
See what you think of the above if you have not managed to solved your issue yet.
xx;)

Hi Hotlips

Th engine fault light should go out provided the original problem has been sorted. Sometimes the light wont go out until the new part becomes active. In my case for example, I had to get the overboost valve to trigger before the "Engine Fault" disappeared.

I wasn't aware the Air Flow Meter could generate an engine fault so I'm hoping it does sort your problem.

BTW When are you going to fill in your profile ;)

Ooh, I hope it fixes my problem too, the guy at the garage said it was the air mass flow thing but I am a bit unsure now. Are you a guy in the know that I can ask in my time of distress? If I get the new mass thing fitted, my probs should go away without resetting the ECU thing, the message only flashes on the screen for a mo before it dissappears. How do I find my profile to fill it in? xx

My JTD appears ok at the moment. I only ever lost boost for 1 day but it's been fine ever since no thanks to the Fiat Techie I went to see. Get the sporadic engine light on but I put that down to Fiat electrics (crap).

I still cant see my overboost valve.

Most common issues with JTD engine are MAF sensor (which you have) and overboost valve.

Reading this thread, from start, should help a bit.

Cliick on "User CP" at top of forum and you can change loads of stuff if you wish :)

Good Arvo Argo! I'm still a damsel in distress! My daddy fixed the Air mass thingy on but the car still makes dips in the power. That garage told me fibbs or they were wrong. My dad told me not to go there on my own but he said, "typical women, never listen" but i'd be drawing my pension before he found time time to come with me. anyhow, we found the Over Boost valve like you mentioned, its under the battery box, but it looks like a bu*ger to get to. My dad will take it over the pit tomorrow night to have a lookie he says, but do you know what he can do make it's life longer before I need to fork out more pennies to the garage? He said that there is an "Anorexic Tube" going from the valve, to the Turbo that's rubbing on the Air-Box clip?!?! I have no idea what that's all about. Would this valve thing be expensive to buy and what is it there for/what does it do? (in simple terms) If I do need a new one do I ask for an "Over-Boost Valve" or does it have a specific technical name? I am getting a bit out of my depth I think.

Tell your Dad to move it so it fits to the side of the battery box (like mine is). Strictly speaking your dealer should do this but you may have problems persuading them if they're as useless as they sound.

The best thing to do is remove it, give it a good clean (but don't soak it in water or anything like that) and also make sure the tubing isn't damaged. If after that you get the same problem then replace it :)

Argo, here's the update.........
I got my dad to relocate my overboost valve and clean it up....No change.
Replaced the MAF.......No change
Replaced the overboost- valve.......No change
ECU reset.............no change
The pipes are all fine apparently and my dad has done everything that has been suggested to me, so any idea's where I can ask dad to check again?

Cheers,

Wilma

Sorry Wilma, I can't think of any other suggestions :(

It looks like you're going to need to take it to a Fiat specialist with access to Examiner to get some idea of where the problem is (there are some good dealers out there honestly - many small independents) :)

Good luck (y)

Hiya, ok dude, I will bite the bullet and go, think I will take daddy with me this time though eh? I will let you know how it goes.

Thnx for all your help,

xx

Argo, should the dealer move this for free if its a standard mod?

They didn't move mine and i still get this fault when it's wet. They said it was a maf sensor fault and changed it but still the problem occurs. Based on this dealer/tech diagnosis I would not let him attempt to relocate my valve. I'd be surprised if he knew where to look.

A word of caution about cheap MAF sensors. Yes you can get them for as little as £55 off the net and ebay, but you must make sure they are the original part. My brother in law has the 20v Bravo HGT and he got a cheap MAF meter off the net. Damn thing was a Chi-com built patern part that didn't work well at all. Replaced this with an original Bosch unit and problem solved.

You can go very wrong replacing sensors and such like with cheap bits, and you run the risk of replacing duff for duff and ending up spending alot more money in the long run as a part, once replaced, is assumed to function correctly and so you replace the next likely part etc, etc, et.

From what I understand, Fiat asked dealers to move this valve during routine servicing (I think the dealer can claim the labour charge back from Fiat so they don't lose out) on all early JTDs.

If your motor is still in warranty then I'd have a word with the service manager but if not you might as well DIY or pay a competent Fiat specialist garage to do it.

Mine was moved by the dealer and looks nice and clean up by the battery (y)

here is a pic of where it is located bozzy:
