Hi all
i have 1600 dynamic stilo. the engine fault light has been on for a while now and the local fiat dealer is telling me the throttle position sensor is faulty. the car is prone to cutting out at tickover and does hesitate sometimes at full power. He can fix it for £550 is this about the going rate? is there somewhere that does reconditioned units?
the dealer did tell me this is a common fault on 1600's but i cant find much mention of tps problems on this site!
the problem is getting worse so i will have to fix it at sometime in the future.
any advice regarding a cheaper solution (DIY fitting?) would be welcome.

cheers ian

hi
If the remap gets rid of the awful flatspot at low revs (1500 ish ) it might be worth it but I cant see it repairing a hardware fault?
i found this site http://www.bba-reman.com/index.aspx that does reconned throttle bodies has any body dealt with them?

OK I have misunderstood "MAP". is this update only available at the dealers? I suppose it will cost me since the car is out of warranty.

thanks for the tip

Throttle Body was an issue but surely it would have gone by now? From what I understood the car was almost undriveable and only affected early ones (believe fault was cured around 52 plate).

Last throttle body (stilo) I done was last summer but they are still around. As a rule of thumb, first update, then clean/relearn(using examiner which can test the results)...if all else fails throttle body.

Hi TI4086 & all
I have just spoken to 2 local fiat dealers and neither of them have heard of cleaning and resetting the TPS or any major ECU updates relating to the MAP sensor. Though both said updates to the ECU were issued on a regular basis but could not tell me whether my car required one. They both of course wanted to charge me £70 to plug the diagnostic machine and check it out.
I am a bit reluctant to do let them do this if they have not even heard of the simpler remedies.
Can any one recommend a FIAT dealer in the Middlesborough Area.

Cheers Ian

I cant believe that two dealers don't know of the ECU and Throttle body updates what kind of dealerships are they are they being run by Mr. Micheal mouse ESQ I have had the procedure done on my car and I can tell you it does the job (y)

To check if the update is available you have to use examiner, thus it has to be plugged in.The update was never issued as a recall or service news its something that good techs know & for all techs to see if they read the release info on the regulary updated flash discs!

Hi

I have similar symptoms on my 1.6 stilo.

No engine codes for tps only a downstream which as far as I know, does not affect fuel trim.

Anyway did you update and did it fix? Also how do I update?

Thanks

Hi Nebula
This is from a long time ago.
As I remember it was not a MAP or TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) fault but the throttle body that needed cleaning. I think the car had the MAP sensor removed/cleaned a few times but it never solved the problem (Stalling at tickover or engine dying when taking your foot of the throttle).

I removed the throttle body and gave it a good clean paying particular attention to the flap pivot points and the area where the flap rested at the closed position. I believe a build up of carbon was causing the air flow to completely stop at the 'closed' position when there should be a small gap to allow a flow of air to keep the engine running at tickover. I seem to remember this was a reasonably straight forward job to remove the throttle body located beside/under the air intake filter.
The ECU interpreted the air flow stopping as a sensor fault when the engine stalled.
The ECU Update was a red herring and not required, I dont recall ever having it done.

This was all a very long time ago I sold the Stilo 14 or more years ago, I hope this is relevant to your problem.
Hope this helps

Thank you for the reply

I have cleaned the TB with engine cleaner. I'm still going to give it a good ass spray with tb cleaner.

I have a hesitation on acceleration and a small rough idle. After replacing air filter she idled much better though.

I shall give her a good cleaning

If it's worth mentioning,I have a white build up in crankcase ventilator. No coolant in oil though to show a gasket leak

Thank you
