Good morning all (y) over the last couple of weeks my steering has started to creak/groan when I turn the steering wheel in either direction I have had a look around the suspension and done the silicone lube thing but this hasn't made one iota of difference :( I have done in depth searches on this subject right back to 2003 and believe it or not no one seems to have found the cause of this problem I see that this is a common problem in the stilo section and it is becoming a regular subject lately so has anyone who has had the problem actually solved it ?you comments please guys and gals (y)
 
I haven't as yet jacked it up and checked it but will do so later :) it occurs when stationary and when driving slowly (y)

OK people listen up I no longer have the creaking/groaning when I turn the steering wheel its "SORTED" (y) and was simple to cure as I thought it is general dryness of all the associated parts linked to the steering.

I jacked the car up and the noise was not there with the weight of the suspension and with the suspension hanging its easy to spray the parts. The main problem though seems to lay in the top mounts and a liberal application of WD40 in and around the top and bottom of the spring area and the top mounts did the trick just remember that every time you turn the steering wheel the whole strut moves and its the dryness that's causing the groaning Ahhhhhhhhhhh :D I took the opportunity to spray all other mounting points and bushes as well while the car was up on the jacks I also fond that with a trolley jack under both sides of the car and up as far is they would go I can easily get under the front and remove the engine under tray to do the oil/filter change that is due so all in all a worthwhile exercise this morning its up to you now to Get Squirting (y)
 
PNL my springs seem to jump a little when turning the wheel and I get a boom/creak noise, as with yours only when stationery or going very slow....where exactly should I spary some WD40 as its worth a go by the sound of your sucess....thanks

As I said in my post above jack up your car from both sides if you haven't got two trolley jacks use stands then with the suspension hanging spray liberally WD 40 at the base and the top of the springs you will see at the bottom where the spring coils go onto the suspension leg spray around there and at the top where the spring connects to the top mounts for the top one connect the little red tube on the spray can as you can aim the spray easier and while your at it give all your lower arm bushes and mounting points a soaking as well and the antiroll bar bushes to I wish you luck and creak free motoring (y) Oh and by the way make sure you don't spray your brake discs and pads with the wd40 for obvious reasons ;)
 
One product I swear by is Waxoyl. I've got a gallon can of this and one of the first jobs I do on a freshly acquired motor is to jack up each corner of the vehicle, remove road wheel and then inspect and lube as required (paintbrush is all that's needed).

Did this on my Stilo and it hasn't squeaked in the last 10 months. :cool:

It's well worth doing this for another reason too. Some alloys can be a killer to remove if they haven't been removed in a while. Best to discover this before you get a puncture :mad:

Waxoil should also work fine but it could be a little harder getting a brush up into the top mounts I haven't tried it with a brush so I cant say how easy/hard it would be :) on the alloys I use copper grease and haven't had any trouble with removing any of the alloy wheels and hey you knew the cure for the creaking so why didn't you post it up I could have gone out and done a squirt here and a squirt there without having to find the problem ;)
 
Funnily enough it was Waxoyl that cured the creaking suspension on my mums Stilo back in 2004. Local dealer swore by it.

My suspension issues seem to have gone but might give it a spraying when I do my drivebelt.
 
Is Waxoyl available in spray cans cos I wouldnt want it running down my arms when useing a brush I'v had enough painting of late and sick and tired of the sight of brushes :p
 
Yep Phil, indeed it is; halfrauds do it. I've just been detailing my engine and the brish split and left hairs everywhere grrr :mad:
 
I thought you would reply with Hellfrauds what would we do with out them ;) Oh your doing the engine cover I take it by the detailing comment well let the old fella give you a little tip try useing a brush and not a brish :p
 
Lol, yeah whole engine bay, looks mint now :D

Might do coolant too and put the pink coolant in (get a new bottle too as it's cruddy) and put pink screenwash in :p
