Technical Blowing Exhaust

he, i have a 1.6 16v stilo, ive got a weird problem with my exhaust but i have no knowledge of exhausts lol, when its nice and cool at the beginning of a journey its quiet, but at the end of a journey when its all warmed up my exhaust begins to blow, it also meakes a slight popping noise when im coasting down the hill i live on. I took it for a service and asked them to look over it, they said a heatshield was amiss so they fixed it, however its still doing the noise. It sounds like its coming from the front of the car and after reading these threads it sounds like it could be the flexi part, after looking at the items above for the lined and unlined parts i realised i have no idea what i was looking at, does any one know which part i need, also has anyone experienced the same with it being quiet then goes to beeing a bit blowy, also how can i be positive its the flexi part?

cheers

hey heres a pic of my flexi part, has it had that quick repair done to it? are those weld near the netted bit suppost to be there? could this be the cause of my problem, like dodgy welds, if so do you think if i rub some of that exhaust putty over them it could solve the problem? i could it be the netted part is dodgy?

yes i think it has, on the end at the front of the car there should be a flange that enables the exhaust to be unbolted from the downpipe from the engine. this is missing on yours, as its probably quicker to just weld the new piece in than sort out the flanges.

I could be wrong so just off to check design on eper

if it was a 1.2 i would be right, but its a 1.6 and im wrong.

the flange is further up- theres a bed in the pipe work and its higher up on the 1.6.

however, it could have had a new flexi welded in as i dont think the original (or indeed mine) had dirty great welds on it like that, that arent straight

well the section looks rather new, especially compared to what i took off mine, do i wouldnt look to change but would think about hunting for the hole if its blowing.

be cheeky and get kwik fit or similar to get it up on ramps and check for you (they do this free) and then make some excuse about coming in later to get the work done and you'll phone them

lol, yeh i'll give it a go, what ive noticed aswell is when i turn my engine off after a journey theres like a crakeling noise coming from the slexi area when its cooling down, the noise is quite noticable and continuos for a little while, would this idicate theres a wole or something?

cheers

hey, ive been to a local garage, they had it up on their lift n they couldn't find jack!, i looked over it to, there was no sutty marks or anything anywhere, how ever i couldn't see the manilfold and cat. hes said by the sound of the airflow from the tail pipe i may have a slight miss fire. Could this be the case? the noise isn't there all the time tho, just when the cars up and running, also could the slight crackling and popping be linked to a slight miss fire? i prosume the only possible way it would wud be that small amouts of fuel are going in the exhaust system? Im quite stuck now lol

sounds like back box baffles are shot and effecting pressure in the exhaust system- will read you post again when i get home at 6pm

hey, when i had it serviced a few weeks back the guy said something about something had perished at the back of the exhaust, ive looked over their visual safety check form and theres an advisory that says 'rear exhaust MTG perished', im not entily sure what they are talking about, but for some reason the word baffle is familar. what are they anyway?

cheers

MTG is just short for mounting i would think, probably refering to the metal bar hanger on the exhaust or the other side of the rubber hanger thats fixed to the car.just re read and could mean the actual rubber hanger is perished, split or broke.

its more of a burble noise, its not like a loud single pop, it sounds like several small fire works in the distance if you know what i mean, like crackling. It definetly seems to be popping in relation to rev movement. I live on a steep hill so i drop it to second when i go over the top, decending the hill so yeh it does when revs increase, also when i slow down in traffic, like slowly glide to almost a stop i can hear it slightly, hope this description helps

I have the same problem with my exhust is been blowing for ages, and was told its was the flexi joint. Do you find you have lost some power as well, mines seems to be less responsive since the exhaust has been blowing?

Luckily on saturday it will be finally fixed :)

Got my blowing exhaust sorted, though its still no as quite as when i first bought it. The guy said its wasnt a great fit.... oh good!

Is it hard to refit a flexijoint then? He said i might needa backbox, would getting one, and having one fitted help?

Got my power back though, and mpg. :)
