Afternoon guys,

So my car is having its gearbox oil changed on Friday...

Due to the location of the filler plug - i really couldn't be bothered to remove the battery, battery tray and other bits to get at it from above and would have rather some warranty on the work relating to gearbox so I have booked in at a garage round the corner from my work.

How much oil do I need to have put back in, my multijet sporting 150 has the C630 gearbox.

Did Fiat release a service bulletin for this gearbox to recommend upping the amount of Oil in it them, im sure I read this somewhere but i cant find the post anywhere on here or an alfaowners.

I was thinking I would just buy 3 litres of Tuela Technyx just to be safe.

Any help appreciated.

Regards
Dan.

Handbook says 1.87 litres.

Don't know anything about Fiat changing the amount of oil. The 150 has a gearbox oil dipstick, so they would have to supply a new dipstick if the volume was changed.

Fill it with a funnel and thin tube into the dipstick hole?

I didn't know it had a dipstick :( - will have to check this tomorrow morning.

I found the post regarding gearbox oil amount changing - it was your post davren but in reference to the M32 and your Croma - so i can rule that out...

Wooopeeee only have to buy two litres :)

Strange you posted that they upped the amount needed to fill them correctly - ill dig out the post tomorrow - just finishing work now! time for a beer :)

The M32 gearboxes are a liability and unfortunately a rather poor design. The bearing on the shaft at the end of 6th gear doesn't take the strain very well and doesnt get very well lubricated where it sits.

GM/Fiat never released anything official about increasing the fill level of the box but many specialists recommend over-filling the M32 as it helps to keep the bearing lubricated and therefore decreases the likelihood of failure.

Then, if it fails, other specialists recommend having the end casings machined out to fit a much larger bearing, better capable of taking the strain.

Your gearbox though, the C630, has none reported issues, so you're free to carry on as normal with it.

You can fill the gearbox without having to dismantle anything or buying any extra kit, just by improvising a funnel from the gear oil container itself.

Most gear oil containers have a long rubbery spout inside, so pull that out. Tip the oil into a clean empty oil bottle or if you don't have one, an empty (dry) water bottle .. or even your mum's best tea-pot etc.

Cut the bottom off the gear oil container... so it becomes a long and thin funnel with a long spout... that neatly fits behind/in/through all the stuff above the gearbox.

Feed the spout into the gearbox filler hole and then pour the gear oil from your mum's best teapot into to the gearbox.

Keep the gear oil container funnel for next time..

Which post was that? My Croma was the old 1986 type 154. The M32 gearbox wasn't around then.

Hey Davren - can't find that post... i think it might have been Robert G8rpi who posted it then... nevermind, car is in TCC garage in baildon having the c.v boot done and the gear oil changed - i havent the time to do it this weekend...

I was going to use David's Car care round the corner from work but when I got their this morning for my booking i was told that the chap had tried to contact me this morning as he is not in today and i will have to re-book it in, i was like - huh... it doesnt matter I'll leave it, and there it was - I walked away.

Not a very good thing for the first time using a local family run business - which seemed to have some very good reviews and the chap seemed very nice and knew his stuff... well its ruined that first thoughts that I had and I'm much happier i took it the other garage now - when I saw the garage it was spotless, they care for classic car's, bikes the lot and had a very nice Jensen sat outside in partial restore so i think its in good hands.

Will be picking her up at around 4:00pm fingers crossed, have also asked him to save some of the old oil as I want to inspect it.

So then - picked the car up and had a chat with the mechanic as he has spotted a couple of other things...

Front offside wheel bearing has a tiny bit of play, need to replace that.
Font nearside calliper that I rebuilt is dragging a little, he lifted the car when it was warm and there was a little resistance on the wheel, however - when it had cooled down it span freely - i really need to replace the calliper carrier on that side as thats what is causing the problem... does anyone know where i can find one of these - i dont want to replace the whole calliper, just the bit that bolts onto the car with the sliding pins in.

And - final thing he spotted - Nearside inner shaft has some play in the tripod joint.
He was unsure if these could be replaced as on some cars its a whole shaft replacement...

Well - luckily i think it can, if anyone can advise that would be great.
I have got most of the part numbers I need and will do some digging / hunting and buy what I can this evening...

But - need some help sourcing a calliper bracket / hanger, the new pins with boots and this tripod piece.

In ePer - it doesnt like the tripod as replaceable but i have seen them online before so im unsure if its half a shaft i would have to replace or a complete one.

Im also wondering if this shaft is what is causing my drivetrain rumble under high load at lowish RPM in 3rd gear and onwards.

Also - the gearbox oil was changed, the old stuff looked very clean for what it was and he reckoned it had been changed recently but anyhow - i have piece of mind now, and no metallic colour and not bits of metal in it :) - he said it was a bitch of a job and he had to use a syringe - just like sussexa.

Anyway - 1.5 hours work and £20 for the c.v boot £105.49 all in.
Wasn't expecting that price BUT then again - you pay for what you get.

He went round the whole car and checked everything too, most places wont do this unless asked, i never asked - i just mentioned all the work i had done before and he praised on that - said i had done a smashing job...

So, would i use this garage again - a little pricey but definatley a big phat YES - this is what a garage should be like!.
