Hi all
I broke down on the Motorway on Thursday, car started to be sluggish, managed to get out of road works before it shut down on me, had enough to get me to hard shoulder. Tried to restart but just turns over. 9 hours later finally get back home thanks to RAC, who were a bit vague what it could be
Husband has checked spark plugs they are OK, fuel is getting through, but spark plugs not wet when we turn it over
Any suggestions of what it can be, also a diagram of engine lay out would be good if any one has one, unable to get a Haynes Manual, looks like one wasn't produced
Thanks all

There isn't a haynes manual as such for the Fiat Stilo. I suggest you download the eLearn manual from the downloads section of this website, found here:

https://www.fiatforum.com/downloads.php?do=download&downloadid=345

This is the Fiat Dealer level workshop instructions that Fiat provide to their dealer network - so you should find most answers in there.

As for fault finding....

I hate to jump straight to it but the obvious is to check the ECU codes and see what it's telling you.

The 1.6 unfortunately is known for overheating it's ECU due to it being mounted on top of the engine. If you dash is lit up with a load of different warning lights and errors that could point towards this being the case. Fault codes may lead you in this direction too.

Check the fuses and relays that relate to the fuel system if your spark plugs are coming up dry. Consult your owners manual for references to what fuses are where.

Another obvious thing is unless you're 100% confident it's got fuel in it, stick a jerry can of fuel in it just to make sure it's not run dry.

Hi.
Does the fuel pump under rear seat HUMMM
When ignition is on?

No manual as such but look in the GUIDES at top of Stilo section for further pics/info

Where is the car based..?

If you connect one of the HT leads to an old spark plug and lay it on a metal part of the engine, it should spark when you crank the engine. If it does, then the ignition side of things is working okay.

If you remove the inlet fuel pipe from the fuel rail (catch any fuel in a small container) then fuel should "pulse" out when you crank the engine. If it does, then the fuel side of things is working okay.

Next job will be to check that the injectors are working. You can remove the electrical connector from one of the injectors are stick the tabs of a bulb (or multimeter) in there and see if it "flashes" when you crank the engine.

Since you have sparks and fuel, my money is on the injectors not doing their thing, especially as the car came over all sluggish (like it was running out of petrol?).

It could be a relay or fuse (I'm not sure where they are on your car.. but they'll be in the fuse/relay box on top of the battery) or if those all check out, it could be an ECU problem.

You can get ECU's diagnosed and fixed.. but it's a more tricky/expensive failure than a duff relay etc. so check these first. They do get splashed/wet where they are (not helped by people throwing away the fusebox and battery covers, instead of putting them back on) so could be just a corroded connection.
