Mates,
How does the Fiat/Alfa cam-belt tensioner work? I mean the type with the little pointer as fitted to at least my JTD and also some Alfa Twin-Spark engines.
As I understand it, the tension is set by rotating the little dibber-dobber pointer so it lines up with a hole in the back plate.. then you tighten up the screw and release the pointer.
Now.. occasionally I'm sure I've seen the pointer pointing at the hole... but whenever I fit one, I rotate the pointer to the hole, hold it there with the little round stick tool... then tighten it up. When I release the pointer, it always drops back to its original position.
Now.. I've not really ever had trouble with the tensioner (although see my other latest thread.. ) but I'm curious how this tensioner works, in case I'm blundering about by accident.
How come the tensioner can point at the hole (correct position) but when I fit it, the spring loaded part just drops back to its stop?
