dear all,

my '03 stilo 1.9 jtd has started running a bit rough. my mechanic has had a quick look and not found anything obvious, he's offered to delve a bit deeper but that is likely to involve a hefty bill so i thought i'd pick brains on here to see if anyone could offer some advice that i could maybe investigate myself?

when sitting idling it sounds likes it missing but once you drive off it goes fine with plenty of the usual poke you'd expect from this car.

i can do an average amount of mechanics but am lost when it comes to ecu's and electrics so hoping it might something within my scope of ability.

many thanks in advance!

It may be the idle control valve or the lambda sensor... possibly an inlet leak.

Is your fuel consumption suffering?

You could also have a go at removing that plastic pipe to the inlet manifold and cleaning out the innards of the manifold (including the crankcase vent pipe and the EGR inlet). it'd be good for it to have nothing impeding the air-flow.

Exactly what Ralf S. - however, i have the knowledge - but have not done any of that yet on my JTD 16v, its finding time for me which is a bummer being a family guy and working lol.

I need to know where my EGR is, i havent even really googled it yet, well i did but couldnt be bothered digging - was bit drunk at the time hahahaha.

Mine is disabled (as per what MES says) but would rather still check it.

The EGR valve is behind the inlet manifold, on the right hand side of the engine (as you look at it) around the level where the throttle body attached to the inlet manifold.

You can usually get hold of it from the top, once the plastic cover is out of the way.. but I helps if you remove the air inlet pipe and even the throttle body to get access to clean everything in the inlet manifold at the same time.

thanks for the advice, will get onto it this weekend and post results,

Now that you mention it, I'm not 100% sure... :D

To be honest, I've never seen the lambda on my old beast... but I've not had to do anything (yet) that required me to track it down. On other cars/and I thought... if it had a cat' it also must have a lambada sensor. Those were petrol though. I have no idea what diesel does.

Re. ICV.. there's a doodah on my throttle body that looks like an upside down diaphragm... which I assumed does something with the idle. As above though... I have no idea how diesels modulate idle. *Something* has to give the ECU the ability to tweak the idle speed... so "whatever that is", even if it's not called an Idle Control Valve.

JTD 80 and 115 engines don't have lambda sensors. I don't know if the later higher power engines do.

The "doodah" with the vacuum diaphragm on the air inlet is an anti-shudder valve. It's sole purpose is to stop the engine running on after you switch it off. With the ignition switched on, it should be fully open, then when you switch the engine off, it should close for a few seconds, then revert to fully open.

Have you run any diagnostics? where are you located? If you are near Cambridge I could stick Multiecuscan on it for you.

my mechanic said he ran it through the computer and nothing came up, i assume that he would have run an ecu scan? thanks for the offer but i'm up in yorkshire, appreciated though!!

Hey up - if your still up for meeting up this weekend, ill do an ecu scan for you :)

Hi, that would be great. Have been having trouble getting emails through to Sean at sturgess but just spoken to him this morning and should hopefully have the security code by end of today, all being well I'll be able to come over to you this weekend, I'll let you know asap, cheers

No worries dude :) - just to reassure you, i have transferred my MES licence (day before yesterday) and paired up my 2nd hand refurbished remote :slayer:

Just need to get the blade cut... and program the transponder.

hi,
got all my codes now :), when and where would be good to meet up to sort the key fob and scan the ecu? can speak over phone if easier? would be good to discuss what/if costs are to be charged??
cheers

hehe - i will PM you my post code and door number and details :)

Couple of beers sounds good, im not after anything to be honest - if I can help a fellow member then that's more satisfaction than over charging and hiking up prices like garages and dealers do...

If it wasn't a forum member or a neighbor then who knows LOL.
