I have a 2003 1.2 5door Stilo which usually works very well.

It blotted its copybook somewhat earlier when the passenger window powered down but would not come back up. There wasn't as much as a click from it when pressing either passenger door switch or the One on the drivers door. The fuses checked ok and there was 12v present to both switches in both doors.

I was about to pull the whole mechanism asunder when I remembered there is a window actuation test in MES. Low and behold, it got the window back up and it has been working perfectly since.

I'm afraid that this problem might happen again , particularly as it came on without warning and the car has had no previous history of this. Has anyone seen this problem before and know what the cause / fix for it is?

It's likely related to the big multi-plug between the door and the car - they're a tad notorious.

My Abarth, when it was my wife car not long after we got it, used to be a swine for doing the same with the drivers side window. She would be able to spot when the connection had failed because the drivers side mirror - part of the multi-plug - contains the outside air temp sensor and the reading would mess up on the dash.

As a 'field fix' if it ever did it when she was out and about I'd trained her to pop the clip on the multi-plug with the key blade, undo the connection and do it back up again. This was usually sufficient to restore functionality, at least temporarily.

The more permanent fix is a simple one. Get a can of contact cleaner (Maplin, UK) and give the plug a hosing down. The simply plug it in and undo it a whole bunch of times - just to get a bit of friction between the surfaces and help remove any corrosion or muck. Then hose it off with cleaner again and call it job done.

Did this with my Abarth nearly a year ago and it's never been a problem since.
