What would you say would be the cause of this.

It's been doing it for quite a while and only when the engine's warmed up.

Could it be a dirty inlet control valve?

Hi Frederik,

What engine is it? The following may or may not be applicable depending on what engine you've got.

I dont think these things have an idle control valve as such, more a motorised controller on the side of the throttle body which regulates the movement of the throttle body to hold an idle.

I think on the Fiat Stilo this may well be part of the throttle body itself and not necessarily a changeable / serviceable item but can't be certain as dont know the engine.

You can have a look at pulling the throttle body and cleaning it. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE BUTTERFLY VALVE BY PUSHING ON THE BUTTERFLY. That is critical - if you do that you'll ruin it. Clean with carb cleaner and cotton wool buds or something.

You can try and source a second hand replacement part - eBay UK has quite a few at cheap money.

Or you could live with it and see if it gets worse. It only becomes a real problem when it doesn't idle properly at cold temperatures (meaning car stalls).

It's the 1.6.

Before about 2002, there was a separate IAC valve.

It's a 2002 model, and from what I know the Stilo weren't in production before that year?

I was refering to the 1,6-16V engine, used in many Fiat models.
Anyway, find out if your car has a seperate IAC valve or the later version with integrated IAC valve in the throttlebody.

Turns out it was the throttle body that needed cleaning, rpm's are now stable. But thanks for the help
