Guys, I was wondering..

What if you engaged deadlocks on a stilo, so that the doors could not be opened from inside or outside

In the meantime, the battery goes flat.

Would you still be able to open the driver`s door using a key in a barrel from the outside ?

Has anyone tried this?

I wanted to try this one on a stilo but I am away now and won`t be able to do it until April..

Thank You

In the old days when XR3s and GiTs were being nicked every two minutes, some of the local Barrystas used to fit an extra (mechanical) dead lock.. so they had two locks and two keyholes on the door.

I don't know how electric deadlocks work when the battery goes flat... but if your deadlocks are essentially a separate lock, then they would be opened with a key, if you have no electrics.

Thank you Ralf !

Basically the main reason why I am asking this is because I am preparing a detailed how-to write up covering the stilo lock, deadlock and its issues. I have few old locks on hand which I am trying to refurbish at the moment and that is why I am gathering as much information about these systems as possible. I have already found that the motors inside the lock could be replaced with new units. The rest of mechanism could be lubricated and tested in a simple way, but then again, more of it to come , I will make a detailed post about my findings in `how to ` section, but once I am back from the sea in about 2 months time more or less.

Stilo deadlock, or double lock as some call it, is not additional mechanical lock. It is more of a system of levers plus an additional motor inside the sealed lock unit (which CAN be opened) which moves into place in order to prevent the inside door handle from opening. Hence my question about the mechanical way to open it if the power was lost. Theoretically, it should be possible to open it that way.

Thank you again for you answer and if you have any additional info please do not hesitate to post.

Even with the battery disconnected the locks should open without issue using the mechanical key. The deadlocks simply isolate the actual locking mechanism from the internal release mechanism. To prevent the door being opened by use of a slim Jim or being forced at the top and opened using a rod to pull the internal handle.
If your refurbishing the locks you have then I have a few new lock barrels you can have for parts if you want them.
