Here's an interesting one.. I hope.
I'm looking for a new oil filter for Gerrard, as you do..
I found that the following part numbers are all after market suppliers that are allegedly compatible with the 115bhp diesel donkey. I believe the Fiat part number is 46796687 but ePer is off the road at the moment.
Whilst the diameter "d" (76mm) and the seal diameter "d2" (72mm) are the same, the height "h" of each filter is different:
Mann 7003 - h53mm
UFI 23 455 00 - h61.5mm
Bosch 0451 103 300 - h67mm
Mahle OC458 - h73.5mm
UFI (who I think is the OE supplier) makes a pretty small filter (though not as small as Mann). Bosch looks like "near enough to make no difference) but Mann and Mahle have quite different opinions how big the filter should be..
As a fan of "fit the biggest bastard one that will physically fit" (assumes more filter area and space for the beast to do it's filtery business) I'm tempted by the Mahle doodah ... but why are the filters different sizes and does it make any theoretical difference?
I'm assuming each manufacturer just makes use of existing stampings and parts to create a filter that does the job for a particular engine.. and in reality there's no pro's or con's against a big or a small filter... but I'm curiouse if anyone knows anything...
