Only have one remaining factory key for our Stilo, and all the options for replacement seem costly.

Is there any reason why I couldn't dismantle the transponder chip from the working keyfob and permanently attach it near the ignition barrel? Gaffer tape it underneath the plastic shroud, for example? Then we could use any dumb cut-to-pattern blade, from Timpsons etc.

It's an old, worthless car and I don't care about any hypothetical vulnerability to theft. Also if the transponder is out of sight, no potential thief could know it had been jerry-rigged. No-one has ever tried to steal my Stilo's (10yrs of ownership), so I don't think it's going to happen now.... :)

The short answer is "Yes".

Tape the *whole* old key inside the steering column and use a zombie key to unlock and start the car. That way you can always get the original key back out.. if you ever want to, or if you find someone can clone a new key from it (e.g. Timpsons).

Timpsons can (depends on the key / immobilisor type) clone a new key from your blue one, rather than requiring the red one as in the old days.. so when you go to buy the zombie key, just ask them first.

Yes, if I can get a couple of 'zombie' blades cut cheaply, that's a good idea. Save the original factory key intact.

Oh, didn't think of that. I thought every key had to be registered on the ECU as a unique transponder code, but if the original factory key can be cloned for a reasonable price that's a great option. If I can get that for £50 or so, I'll happily skip all the messing about.

Thanks!

Hi, I can supply a working none remote key for your Stilo, £75.
If you trick the immo, Your not insured, full stop.
Some on here would disagree and some will say, the insurance company will never know.
They will if some toe-rag nicks your car using a lolly stick and ploughs into a bus stop.
Reckless and pikey.
The consequence's could be life changing, all for the sake of saving a few quid.
Good luck.

Thanks, that sounds like the best option then. Do you need the factory key to copy or clone from, ponsaloti? I'm in Yorkshire so would need to post it recorded delivery, and plan for the car being unusable for a few days.

Ah, okay. I'll try to find a more local option then.
Thanks for the advice.

Just had a key done for an Audi A3 8p SB by these folks while I waited. With December discount was £48 inc. That was for cutting a new key and programming a new immobiliser.
I would think the Stilo is a cheaper job.
For what it's worth local Timpson would not even cut a blank !
