Hi to all.
I've been experiencing some noise and bumpiness in my rear suspension.
I just had someone have a look at it (not a professional mechanic...) and he found some play in a part behind the wheel.
As he was doing me a favour, and I was in a rush, I didn't want to take up too much time, and forgot to check which part it was...
Can anyone help me with what I should be looking to replace, and how to go about doing it?
I lived in Brazil for a while, and after being badly ripped off several times, I have an almost pathological fear of mechanics.

Anyway, have a look at the following (very poor) photos and thanks in advance for any advice.

Well from the picture I can't for the life of me work out what you're looking at. You've not said whether it's front or rear axel that the picture comes from?

Here is a picture of the front suspension setup:

And here is a picture of the rear suspension setup, rear beam:

and shock towers:

See if these help work out what you were looking at.

Well it's a shock absorber bush, looks like a rear one but does not match @Artermis drawings. Maybe a "helper" shock? Exactly what model, body style and year is your car?
In any case the bush looks bad. While you can replace just the bush The cost of a complete shock is normally low enough that it's better to replace the whole thing. Both sides of course.

Thanks for the replies. It's the rear axle of a Stilo estate 2006.
Now that you mention it, the guy did say that I could replace the whole shock and that would sort it.
If I get a chance I'll have the wheel off and take some more photos.

Thought it might be the station wagon.

Fairly easy job to do, if the bolts come out easily. Shocks should be around £30 each for pattern parts or £70 for branded.
