I've got a radiator leak from near the expansion hose on my stilo 1.2. I went to two dismantlers in search of a replacement radiator and both rads they offered had no point to attach the expansion hose, just a bleed screw where the small hose should attach. Are there two types of rads used on the 1.2 or is there a way of transplanting the rads the breakers offered in to the car I have?
 
I've had a look on fleabay and the radiators (below) that allegedly fit the 1.2 (Fiat part number 46799894). None of them have a separate receiver for the coolant header tank hose (just for the two big hoses)...

On the other hand... ePer only shows one radiator for the 1.2.

Did you check your radiator to see where the header tank hose screws in? It looks like the hose attaches to a connector piece (71732820) which screws in at the top corner of the radiator.

Does this connector screw into the "bleed screw" hole? You might have to remove the connector from your radiator, screw it into the bleed screw hole and then connect your header tank hose to it.

The connector has an O-ring (71730455) if yours is perished. The connector and the O-ring come with the radiator if you order a genuine Fiat part.

The radiators which the breakers offered all had what looked like bleed screws in the same spot where the breather hose should be. I didn't realise that the pipe detaches from the radiator and there's an O-ring in the mix. I'm wondering if this is where the leak is coming from...? I'll pull the rad out and have a closer look at it so.

The connector looks like a simple tube with a screw thread on one end and probably a flanged stub on the other end.

I'm guessing it screws into the bleed screw hole (made water/pressure tight by the O-ring/washer) .. and the hose from the header tank pushes over the flanged stub, held in place by a hose clip.

If you remove the clip the hose will pull off the connector (pull it off "straight", not at an angle in case you snap the connector). It should have a hex moulded into it (for a spanner to screw/unscrew it)... in which case, just unscrew it.

Having said that ^ I haven't seen a real one.. so I'm just imagining what you'll find. But the main thing is that the connector appears to screw in to the radiator around the same place as the bleed screw.. AND the 1.2 does not have a bleed screw as standard (after-market radiators could be different) whereas a 1.6 say, does have a bleed screw but no connector.

I partially drained the cooling system earlier and unscrewed the connector pipe from the radiator with a deep 16mm socket. The pipe didn't seem particularly tight and I could unscrew it very easily by hand. The O-Ring seemed squashed but I have a large box of assorted rings and found a suitable 5mm match. Once everything was replaced, topped up and bled, I took it for a spin and left it idling in the driveway for around 15 minutes. Eventually the fan kicked in and there was no sign of a leak, so hopefully I have it licked....but time will tell (y)
 
Bad news today. I was swapping the radiators as the original was corroded to the point that I was concerned it would eventually give. During the transplant, I accidentally broke off the expansion connector pipe. The replacement rad didn't have one either :( I rang my local Fiat dealer and quoted the part number above (71732820). I was told that this item is no longer available :eek: I was on the verge of shelling out for a new radiator when I managed to locate one by pure chance in a dismantlers. The radiator was gone but the pipe was still attached to the hose to the expansion tank! Happy days :slayer:

That was close! :D

I did say be careful with that connector... I'm guessing it's made of that brittle plastic that the radiator sides are made out of.

A little bit shocking that the parts are no longer available though... :eek: A good punt if you're desperate is to go on holiday to Italy and try the dealers there.. They are more likely to have obscure parts in their network, compared to UK. And you get to go on holiday... :D

I think Fiat keep all parts in stock for 7 years after the end of a model's production.. so around now, anything in the parts network could be "the last one". If you need anything, check whether your dealer can get it.. and if they can (OE) buy it.

Fortunately (?) Fiat occasionally uses various parts on different cars that are still in production, even if the Stilo isn't... so that keeps the part available longer.
