Hi all,

I just bought my stilo 1.6 3 weeks ago.
In the beginning the car seems to coughing if i drive lower than 2000rpm. So we brought it to the Fiat garage to let them run computer check, balance the wheel and replace the battery.
However, this week the car does crazy things again. If i'm driving on lower than 1000rpm the car will be quite shaky and the coolant sign will burn out of nowhere, the heat indicator goes to max.Hot and the car tries to shut off the engine. To prevent this i gas up the car and the error message just dissapear. It happens for 5x for the last 2 days. The last 2x it does this crazy thing, they error message say ASR failure,Loose connection,Cruise control On(while it's not),and Engine failure. And the FIAT garage says that they dont find anything weird from last check-up.

Does anyone else have any idea what happened with my Stilo? I really like the car, but this errors scares me and could possibly be dangerous if it gets worse.

Btw, the coolant and the oil were refilled when i bought the car.

I like others was getting engine failure, asr failure, loose connection when I had a bad coil. It seems to be feeding interferance back to the ECU or creating interferance on the can bus.

First things to eliminate, check the earths by the battery, connectors on bottom of fuse box, check fuse box for water ingress, remove the ecu connectors and check ecu pins are all the same height and not loose.
 
A failing coil (or spark plug) would give the engine misfiring issue.. and corcai has seen that this can cause issues with the electronics.

If you take each plug out ... you'll need to remove the coil too ... then inspect it carefully.

Look for any plug that is worn, oily or with bits missing. Re-set the electrode gaps. If the plugs look "not great" then buy new ones.

Check the coils. Look at the spark plug end for any signs of arcing (like pencil lines) or broken insulation or burning. If any look tatty, try to find a new (or second hand) one.

Also note if there is oil inside the plug wells. It can leak from the rocker cover gasket and cause a short circuit.... though if you remove the plugs then the oil will drain into the cylinder. If you have *a lot* of oil in the plug wells... soak it up with a cloth before you remove the plugs.

If the leads to the coils look loose or tatty, then that might also be an issue.

Just as a last resort, get some fuel injector cleaner and run the maximum dose on the bottle through the tank (500ml for a full tank, or something similar). You might have a clogged or lazy injectore..

That's a whole other story... so check the plugs and coils first.
