Hi all,

I need soms advice on a problem I recently encountered. I get a ESP and ASR failure when driving.

I hear ticks coming from the fusebox right under the steeringwheel. My fuelmeter and my speedmeter are going nuts while driving. They stop working and start working constantly.

Also when I push the gaspedal it holds back and really stutters.

The light next to the gearbox ASR (selespeed) comes on and I can't get it off.
Cruise Controle doesn't work anymore.

The engine doesn't cut out. Changing gears is no problem.
Sometimes when I open the window, it also stutters a little.

I hope to find some advice so I get a starting point of where to search for a solution.

I already sprayed alot of contacts with contact spray, but this didn't help at all.

Thanks in advance!

Had this on my 1.4 stilo and I changed the coil packs and it was fine after that

First thing to check is the voltage the car is receiving. If you have MES and cable check voltage when problems occurring.
Check it has the correct battery fitted and it is in good condition, Check battery clamps and earth cables.
Low voltage is most likely problem.

It's better if you can stick on MultiEcuScan (MES) and check for the errors.
It can be several things, it can be one of the sensors, a connection to a sensor, or even a misalignment issue (I had this issue with ASR cutting the power on corners and problems were solved when I changed steering rack, one wishbone and tires - obviously the car wasn't aligned as it should with the faulty parts).

How is your battery?

Sounds like it would be worth checking out the battery and battery connections. You will want to check out the fuse box connections too.

You're going to want to check the charging voltage with the car running too.

Thank you all for your replies!

It seems Infinite was right. It was a loose sparkplug, which caused the coilpack to malfunction.

Replaced the sparkplug first, which helped a little, but problem still there. Then replaced coilpack and everything is fine again.

:D

Hi guys.

I have the same problem on my 2.4 Prestigio (has literally just happened after putting it up for sale, really frustrating).

I had a tyre replaced not too long ago and after light coming on yesterday I took the wheel off to find the abs sensor crushed in the suspension spring! The guy who did the tyre must have knocked it out of its holder or something. Anyway so I changed the abs sensor this morning, drove down the road and all warning lights went out. A few miles later and they're back on. I've spent hours cleaning the sensor hole out as lots of grit and crap in there. The lights stay on when starting the car and go off after a few metres and then back on after a few miles.

Anyone know what would cause this and if it's the coil pack, how does that affect abs/asr? I have asr,abs and esp failure coming up when starting car. The car runs ok but a slight misfire I would say, not as smooth as it was. When I plug my diagnostics machine in, the power goes all weird similar to the other guys. Drops in and out of power.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks everyone.

It the tyre the correct size and inflated correctly, sounds silly but that can trigger abs/esr if the rolling diameter is different to the others.

As to how coil it affects abs / asr, the fault is a loss of communication between the units. My theory is the failing coil pack is spewing rf and back emf back to the ecu and through the loom, you can sometimes hear the bad coil producing EMI on the radio.

Hi mate. Thanks for the reply. I had that tyre brainwave yesterday and went to see what pressure the tyres were, the new one was 10psi over the others! So I thought that might be it, took some air but still the same. As for the coil pack, thanks for the info. I do hear a buzz from the engine bay?

Update - I changed one of the ignition coils which I suspected was the culprit based on its condition, it hasn't cured the fault but changed it slightly. Now the ABS light goes out first and then the others before all coming back on together. Beforehand they all went out together too. Any ideas? Spark plugs? They look to be in near perfect condition so I haven't changed them yet. Thanks again

There are two problems that caused this to my stilo. First was 2 damaged coils, second a knackered bearing and finally worn out plugs and all three individually caused the esp abs lights to switch on. If plugs and coils are fine then possible the abs sensor isn't reading the bearing it cud be something affecting the communication between the two hope this helps regards andy

Hi Andy. Thanks for the reply mate. I had it diagnosed properly a couple of days ago and it flags up a fault code of ABS wheel speed sensor. I replaced this part a week or so ago so I think you're correct about the bearing. Is this like a ABS ring with teeth? Also, does it come on the driveshaft or can you buy it separately? Thanks. Paul

No mate the abs ring is built in to the bearing itself so unfortunately it's a bearing replacement in the hub. Does your wheel make a clicking noise at low speed or when you stop if so the bearing is collapsing mate its what mine did which was the reason I checked mine when removed the hub there were metal shards all over the abs ring which meant the sensor wouldn't read it and set the esp/abs lights off on the dash glad to help mate

That sounds EXACTLY like what mine is doing. Clicking noise at low speed is happening. Thanks again!

Yep it will be collapsing mate would change it tbh
