Hi,

We've got a 3 door Stilo 2005 1.6 sport, which we've had for about a year now and it's never given us any issues (we got it for 700 quid!)

However, the other morning when it was cold and icy, I stopped in traffic and the engine just cut and it said 'Loose Connection'. It keeps doing this now.

It's strange, because when I plug the OBD2 in, no fault codes are shown.

And if I start the engine and wait for it to cut, the OBD2 cannot connect to the ECU to read any faults.

There was one instance where it came up with Alternator, Loose Connection, Car Security Failure. Again, the OBD2 wouldn't connect. I managed to get the car to start back up eventually but no codes then showed on the OBD2.

I checked the alternator, 14.2V at the battery with engine on, 12.8V with engine off, nothing wrong there!

I'm starting to think it's the ECU due to the randomness of the fault and due to the fact that when the fault shows the OBD2 cannot connect to the ECU.

Any thoughts anyone? please help :(

Thanks!

Elliot

I did try to search on here and found lots of people have this loose connection problem, but usually people were able to plug in the OBD2 and retrieve a fault.

Thanks for the reply mate
Unfortunately I have no idea what the abs ecu is, and how I get to it, or read any errors from it?

Could you please help with this?

I use the Torque Lite app, with a Bluetooth OBD2. Would this be able to check it somehow?

Hi,
Iv had the same problem, make sure your battery's good and terminals are tight!
Mine showed 12.8 v but wouldn't keep its charge..
Also have a look at the fuse box.theres a guide on here on how to clean it that can cause electrical problems you have!

Torque app will only communicate with the engine ECU. MultiECUScan is able to access all the different elements of the control systems network (CANBUS). You may find that your OBDII Bluetooth device isn't able to connect to that may ECUs either so you will need some additional adapters and possibly additional cables, e.g. ELM interface too.

If you access the MultiECUScan website it has a compatibility table by car and you can see what ECUs on your car the software will work with and what cables and/or adapter cables you're going to need in order to talk to them.

It isn't unheard of that people do literally cook their ECUs given their location on the engine they overheat and cause issues. There is a fair bit of chatter about that around the forum if you search for it.

Have a search I think it's the D10 connector behind the dash is often known for causing these kind of lose connection warnings or it could just be a really crummy earth connection somewhere or even rubbish connections on your battery. I've had instances where I've had to sand and clean up the battery terminal and the clamp on the earth side and it's solve my issues.

Thanks for the replies!

I think this may be over my head to be honest - If I had more time I might have a good mess around with it!

I'm going to drop it at the garage on Wednesday for them to investigate, hopefully they can help!

How can I check this D10 connector?

Does anyone have a pic of where this connector is? :)

Got the codes from the garage today

One is for the water temp gauge - which sometimes tells me the temperature is high, which is a lie, but then it goes away

The only other code was for the speedo.

So I presume the loss of connection to the speedo is the issue.

Would this indicate an ECU problem? As the speedo works fine!

I think the most common cause of 'Loose Connection' is the crank angle sensor (also known as the RPM sensor. When it is intermittent, the engine ECU fails to respond on the CAN bus in time, and 'Loose Connection' results. Of course, the engine also fails to start or may stop running.

interesting .

i have a airbag problem i am chasing and have had it linked to laptop displaying codes . but recently its not doing it. and airbag light on dash is not going out and re lighting its solid plus the orange light for disabled airbag is on too , i thought maybe a rubbish battery could be causing ecu to not get volts and bought a new battery .

now it flags up . asr/abs , loose connection and security and wont start. i had the plugs off airbag ecu and fuse box to clean connectors before battery replacement, but now the ecu wont connect to laptop either now.

could crank sensor not be getting volts from ecu and stopping starting ? . could the ecu have suddenly died ?

Crank sensor won't stop the ecu talking to the laptop.

What did you clean the connectors with, was there any signs of corrosion, did you disconnect the battery before unplugging things.

Start with the basics, earths, double check the connectors and loom you've fiddled with.

the fuse box had broke , took awhile to find , but it stopped at the same time as a battery change
