Ok so as many of you guys no I have wolfrace 17s on my stilo atm I have 205 40 17 on the front but want to make the tyres side wall bigger as the road noise is terrible and I feel every bump in tge road is 205 45 17 the biggest you can have with no problems or can I have 205 50 17 tyres as I already use thid size on my rears any help would be greatful thanks andy :)

Well you probably know that the side will is an aspect ratio or % size of the tyre's width.

So a 40 ratio tyre is going to be 82mm tall. A 45 ratio tyre is 92.25 and a 50 tyre is going to be 102.5 so you're looking at another 2cm of tyre.

That is going to mess with your gearing quite a bit and possibly put your speedo out quite a bit too. It's a lot of extra tyre to get in there. Whether it'll clear or not I don't know.

Good luck.

Ye I was thinking that it cud knock the speedo out as iirc standard stilo tyres on 17" blades etc is a 45 side wall so thinking to stick with that as this wont compromise the speedo being out. The 40 side wall is slightly smaller when putting the standard steel side by side to each other as thry standard tyre size for steels is 195 65 15 which is quite a large tyre to begin with

i am currently on 215 45 17 , suppose you could get a bit more tread in there as well if the aspect of 215 is more than 205 . not the cheapest tyre size tho, but even I wanted to try the next size up for my mw

I've just run my Abarth through an online tyre search thing for you. Recommended tyre sizes for my car are:

205/55/16
215/45/17

(that is of course based on whether I have factory 16s or 17s)

So as you are running 205/40s you're actually running too small a tyre potentially.

You have a side wall of 82mm currently on your setup; where factory would be 96.75 so you're actually pretty small there.

Looking on black circles you can get their cheapy tyre in the 215/45 for as little as £31 each. Or something like toyo for around £50 each. Not sure what engine you're running but for one of the little petrols on a wagon I can't imagine the cheapy tyres would be the worst thing in the world. Depends how spirited you like to get!

Without sparking a whole tyre debate - if you do want to defy physics I'd recommend Bridgestone Potenza RE050As (73 quid a go). I had these on my Alfa GTA (3.2 V6) and they were capable of literally bending your face.

Mones the 5 door hatch back model and is the 1.2 so really doesnt have high bhp out put so the cheapest would probably be ok to have on mine  and thought the tyres were a bit on the small side so might stick to 45 side wall as it says its the right size for the car

you need to make sure you get the right width (215) with the side wall being an aspect ratio otherwise you'll still come up short.

Check out tyre ratings before you buy as some are noisier than others and you'll notice the difference in a couple of dBs.

Shame as I think you had to replace at least one rear tyre for MOT didn't you?

Other option is to have an eBay / breakers yard hunt round you may find a good set of used alloys and tyres for not a lot different than it would cost to replace all the tyres - plus could sell on current set.

If you found a set of genuine fiat alloys, maybe even in 16s she would ride a lot better, make less noise and you might not have any insurance implications to deal with having to declare the aftermarket parts.
