The exhaust backbox on my 1.2 Stilo is on the way out. It has gotten raspy and now there long strangs of fiberglass wadding (looks like horse hair!) has started to come out of the tail pipe. So it's time for a replacement. My question is: what manufacturer back box to go for? Some are more expensive than other and I don't want something cheap and nasty. Can someone recommend one to go for? Are Bosal any good? Thanks in advance!

That will be the sound proofing as it seems the baffles have gone on it. Not the worse thing to happen mine went a while ago

Rear boxes for the Stilo are very cheap, regardless of manufacture. Try one from a Fiat main dealer. If you find them to expensive , most aftermarket makes will still have longevity.

That may be true for the smaller engined Stilos, but is certainly not for the 2.4. I seem to remember being quoted about 1100 GBP from Fiat for the back and centre parts (not the catalytic converters, which are even more expensive). Couldn't find any pattern/aftermarket ones either, other than big bore systems that destroy the wonderful low-end torque of the 2.4.

So, I ended up getting a Powerflow exhaust made (from the cat back), using the old Fiat system as a pattern - i.e. same tubing diameters and box sizes as the original. I must say, it looks and sounds great: very quiet and refined below 3000 rpm, but increasingly (and pleasantly) vocal at higher speeds. It's never intrusive or annoying, even on a long journey. 450 GBP all-in and is in stainless steel with lifetime warranty, so I can stop worrying about it.

Alongside that, a 25-30 GBP back box sounds like a great bargain! :)

Sounds nice bud, had a powerflow one made up for my old nissan and it was sweet, and it was like for like against the old one ;).

And as for £25 - £30 back box, i paid £26 for the mid section on my stilo, new mild steel - will last a couple of years so not too worried, would love a full system on this but its way too much for what the cars worth.

On the other hand, i would a 2.4 ;) just having the spare grand isnt an option at the moment.

Cheapest quote supply and fit was a Bosal at €140. However the back box that's defective is already a Bosal, and to be honest I've never been impressed with it since I got the car. Rang a local Fiat dealer twice who eventually came back with an approximate price of "€150 or so" supply only, and that might not include VAT! Anyone recommend a supplier of genuine fiat parts that might do an exahust cheaper than the dealer? I emailed FiatAlfaSpares who never replied, and I'm still awaiting word from SG Petch to see if the can come up with anything.

TIA!

I would recommend Klarius... they used to br TI and I'd say they are the best aftermarket brand, although Bosal are well respected.

I've tended to use National Tyres in the UK to supply and fit... there's usually some discount vouchers available and there's a 3 year guarantee, plus quality parts. Having said that I felt that my latest exhaust sounded a bit "raspy" compared to the one it replaced, but I've forgotten about that now (probably not a Klarius..).

Obviously genuine Fiat is best but you're unlikely to find one at a reasonable cost. The 1.2 is a nice revvy engine so it needs a decent exhaust.

That's a bargain....!

I'm not impressed by Dutch Bosal (BOs ALkmaar, the name of the company founder and it's home town) exhausts.
Aftermarket quality is a far cry from original...
Ultersport on the other hand has outstanding quality, been driving one for about 5 years and about 75.000mls now, still going strong on a vibrating diesel Alfa Romeo...
(I recently bought another new spare one, just in case...)

Chanced ringing another main dealer today who unfortunately was no cheaper than the first. One point he did make was that after querying the VIN, there were TWO back boxes listed my car and he couldn't say which one was to correct one for mine. I don't have part numbers, but does anyone know the differences so with these boxes?
