Hi all. Planning on tackling my first head gasket replacement.
Stilo dynamic 1.6 16v
Any tips or suggestion that may help me along please.
Also parts such as timing belt thermostat and water pump and Torx bolts.

first of all ask yourself are you experienced/competant enough to do a HG... sorry, im not being cheeky or condasending, but i dont know your skill level and you're a relatively 'new' member... you can kill an engine pretty quick if you dont know what you are doing.

you'll need 'Ribe' sockets for various cambox, and cylinder head bolts. They look a bit like a square-cut torx. (i assume you have torque wrenches, and a decent enough range of Hex sockets for the rest of it)

always do timing belt when removing them. no need for WP or stat replacement if theyre working ok, unless you want to for piece of mind. Might as well do alternator and AC belt if you have AC. as well as plugs, filters and fluids.

will need cam locking tools for timing setup. Valve spring compressor, a full set of head gaskets... INCLUDING cam seals and Valve guide stem seals. Valve lapping paste and stick

i can get you a full list of gasket belt and bolt part numbers if you require. as i have all the parts for my 1.6. could probably find torque settings too.

if mileage is around 100,00mi (160,000Km) its probably time to put a pair of lambda sensors in.

sorry for haphazard post. just writing as i think of it...

Thanks for the reply first of all.
I'm probably not experienced in a way but I'm in college doing a level two and so have quite a lot of people to advise me.
Always handy to perspective on here tho I find as a lot of guys on here have great model specific knowledge.
The cars on 73000 miles. Not long done filters and fluids.
Stat isn't working so that needs doing but I looked on ebay and most listing have the whole housing complete for like 50 bucks and the odd one with just the stat for ten but I'm suspicious not sure if it's the right one.
I'm gonna go for it I think as the value of the car with a blown head means it's this or the scrapie.

go for it..,(y)
take your time ( and lots of pics),;)
:idea:try and get a lot of pots/tubs so you can group together all the random bolts that come off the different assemblies

nothing worse than LOTS of bits all heaped together.. especially if there is a delay in the rebuild:rolleyes:

Great advice, thanks. I'm starting the same job today and was asking myself the same question,i have the tools and have done several H/G's before, but none as important to me so i would appreciate the torque settings too if you have them handy,

Thanks a million,my aut-data cd is corrupt and was a great asset,
I heard today that them head tightening torque angles really stretch the head bolts and are definaltly worth changing.

auto data says 'replace bolts:- No'

i on the otherhand... would replace them anyway... just for piece of mind... id be more worried about stripping the threads from the block before the bolt snapping though ;) either way its a PITA

My wifes H/G blew hard and fast ,she stopped when it threw up the temperature warning, left the car there and got a lift home, the next day I topped up the coolant which was low by 2 litres and drove home 2 miles, found and fixed a small leak at a hose and then after only 5 or 6 miles of use it was leaking compression into the coolant, coolant into cylinders and gunged up my oil into white paste and plumbes of white smoke out the tailpipe.....
