Technical Major electrical gremlins! Seriously struggling!!

Hi, I am having the same issues at the moment. Stilo 1.6 petrol 16v. Exactly the same, engine cuts out while driving, ASR Failure....Did you manage to fix it? I am preparing to change my battery since I think it is indeed very old. I do hope that's the problem, not the alternator.Cheers

Hi folks, had the mechanic look over my car and the only conclusion I got was the battery isn't charging and the drop test didn't fluctuate just drop .1v every few seconds. Am I right in assuming the alternator wouldn't die soo quickly as to not charge at all so would this be more of a wiring problem? Thanks guys.

That's good news - there's the problem you need to solve :) Check the alternator belt for tension and condition. Check the alternator brushes for sufficient length (there needs to be several millimetres sticking out of the removed brush holder).

The alternator is controlled by the engine ECU. Check that its wiring terminal (the small terminal on the alternator) has not broken off. Though, that would give a failure message as I recall. So it is more likely to be a mechanical fault with the alternator - slipping belt, worn brushes, possibly the alternator pulley (it has a one-way clutch on diesel versions). Or perhaps the windings burned out - look for obvious melted areas. I have seen that happen on a 1.9JTD.

Buying a motorbike or a different car doesn't solve any problems. We expect you to get this fixed...! Anything else is a cop-out ;)

Thanks for the replies chaps!

I'm giving up I've looked high and low and everything I can think of I've checked tested and rechecked so its regrettably go to a garage! I've ordered a new alternator but may just get the old one reconed if possible!

I love the enthusiasm Alex, I'd really like to sort it but the coat is rising quite dramatically, was only the beginning of the year I put a new engine in as the cam belt decided it couldn't cope with life!
