While changing the oil and having a general poke about under the bonnet, I noticed that these stilos are quite spacious up front.
I started thinking about engine mods which then led to engine swaps.
Coming from a VW background, it would have to be a VW motor.
I reckon a VW engine and box would fit in fairly easily with a few custom mounts.
Either the 1.8 20v turbo or the 2.9 VR6 for grunt.
Wiring might me a pain in the butt but mechanics should be fairly straight foward.
Anybody know of any conversions already attempted?

I've been thinking along the same lines as I have been offered a 03 golf gti that is mechanically all ok for the right money. I'm considering this as the gti engine is easier to tune than the stilo as you know yourself and for the fact that here in ireland my stilo abarth is €1080 to tax for the year.

€1080 to tax for the year.

I just did my Stilo and cost $NZ 138 (~€82)

Gets in the cheapest tax bracket because it gets a good safety rating.:slayer:

Same here :) I was pleasantly surprised that it was in the 'best' category out of four, which has halved the annual registration cost compared to last year.

I can't understand why anyone would bother to do an engine swap for a VW engine - if the Golf is your thing, keep the whole car, and if you want a Stilo with more grunt, buy a Stilo with the 2.4, and if that's not enough, tune or turbocharge the 2.4 like the Greeks do.

It reminds me of when someone was contemplating taking a 20v Turbo engine out of a Coupe to put in their Stilo, and I asked, why on earth would you not leave it in the Coupe?

alexGS I already have a 2.4 in my stilo it was an idea I was thinking about for running costs and ease of tuning. I'd love to turbocharge my 2.4 but have no idea how to go about it and I struggle to find any information about it.
If anyone can give me any information or links to information on turbocharging the 2.4 I would be Greatful.

If you end up doing an engine conversion i think you'd probably be one of the first to successfully fit a VAG 1.8T into a Stilo [although that'd be sacrilege around here!]
I have been looking at an engine conversion but to be honest there arent any engines from FIAT that have easy access to parts and aftermarket customisation [1.4TJET maybe?], and there aren't that many companies that even offer the kind of comprehensive service that you'd want.

Have a look at the two links below [i'm not sure whether they would fit this into another make but i'm sure if money was no object then anything's possible]:

Hi. Had the pleasure of a 150Hp 4x4 Soda Octavia for about 50k miles a few years back and never had a more capable car on wet roads. looked like a grandad car so annoyed the odd BMW off roundabouts.. . should have been a keeper But had to get rid. From early on would suffer from a major hesitation off a junction or wherever you feather the speed with a light brake and then wish to pull off again. Spent too much at main dealer chasing ghosts. Read somewhere since it might have been a software glitch. Also was the only car I ever had to break down on route, lost an injector coil. That was also due to a recognised issue and the Aa had one in the van. Decided to never touch VAG group again. My little 1.3 Mj at 95 Hp is a much better up to date engine from an engineering point of view. VAG have been napping for too long
