This is all it took the car started fine when cold when hot and driven for a long time I started getting error messages and cut outs there was one simple solution it cost me 2 hrs of my time and now no problems here's a photo ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1435566127.424274.jpg

All that was wrong was the ecu was over heating due to being stuck on the engine under the cover all I had to do was bend a piece of tin into a shelf shape and attach it to the battery box I then drilled a large hole in the tin to allow the black piece of plastic on the ecu to fit through so it sat flat I then carefully drilled through the existing ecu holes and through the tin to allow me to bolt the ecu in place there is no alterations to any wiring I moved it way from the engine but still in reach of all the wires on first test it vibrated a bit so I added the strut u can see in the photo this kept it perfectly in place with the ecu here I drove the car for 2 hrs the engine got very hot as u can imagine and the ecu was stone cold due to being in the air flow any questions please ask away :)

Under the engine cove diesnt sound normal anyway?

Mines bolted to the side of the battery tray and i see bolts in yours similar position.

Any others confirm under the cover is normal.

When it's in its factory fitted location it is covered by the plastic cover that goes on top of the engine trapping all the heat

Thats strange...

I have a 1.2 - mine is sat to the right of the engine behind the airbox - nothing is covering it up, the only thing covering my engine is an airbox and then the cover over the battery - the ecu (body computer) is not hidden / covered by any of these on mine and it's in its factory fitted position.

What age is yours maybe they realised there mistake

not sure why they ever thought an ecu under the cover with the heat and engine vibration would not have issues eventually ?
had a quick search for original location and a few threads popped up for ecu issues on 1.6 and a mention of relocation.
hopefully you've sorted yours for good, if not a cheap next step might be some antivibration mounts like these

just might to check if a ground would be necessary as it would isolate the ecu(a cable from ecu side nut to chassis)I personally don't know if they do or not ground through the case.

Mines got an earth already on it :) cool to c they realised there mistake tho and then fixed it

This is where it was originally mounted then the engine cover on top as well so I've moved it over to the space between engine and battery and it's now exposed to the air flow when driving keeping it nice and cool :)

This is what mine looked like before I built the shelf between the engine and battery the ecu is under the engine cover in This pic ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1435664085.742649.jpg

It's a 52 plate 1.6 16v dynamic

I thought it would be, its only the 1.6 which suffers from ECU failures due to heat soak (likly for owners of Stilo's with other engines).

It might only prolong the inevitable of the ECU needing replacing, but hopefully you might have picked up the issue early enough to prevent it failing completely.

Evening Sussexa, long time no speak!

Im back in a Stilo JTD, my ECU and on my last 2 have always been on the drivers side of the car and not on the battery case, or is yours an Active?

With regards to different type of Stilo's Im sure i have seen someone mentionin a post that there was say a Stilo MK1 (early Stilo) and a Stilo MK2.

Where a few problems had been fixed/changed in the MK2 type 53/04 onwards i seem to remember. Boost Valve on the JTD, and also the rad fan worked from an ECU and got changed to 2 relays for example (i know yours is about ECU mounting)

Might be why? dont know just a thought,

I would consider mine a late model as a 56 reg and its a jtdm 150 sporting yet it never appears to have had a battery cover, just a small cap over positive terminal.
also the boost solenoid is still down next to the air filter on the chassis never had issues running with no lower cover.
to be fair there aint much space around the engine bay so they look to have done their best layout wise.
