hi all im new here and a new Fiat stilo owner my question is my car has HID lights Fitted Just Wondered If They Are Legal As Im considering Taking Them Off And reverting them back to original any advice please Mine Is The 2003 diesel Model

Thanks In Advance

Pete.........

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

If they are original HID lamps fitted during manufacture of the car, then they are legal. If they are after market ones, then they are probably not legal. HID headlamps must have an automatic levelling system, and a cleaning system for the headlamp lenses to be legal.

You can tell if they are original Fiat HID headlamps because there will be an aluminium ECU attached to the back of each headlamp. The car will also be fitted with headlamp washer jets on the bumper, and the MODE switch panel at the end of the dashboard will not have the up and down beam adjuster switches. The switches will be blank as in the picture below. To operate the automatic levelling system, there will be 2 sensors, one on the rear axle crossmember and one on the front right suspension wishbone.

Hi there thanks for the info well it looks like they are after market ones because the up and down arrows are on the mode switch also there are no headlamp washers so it looks like ill be removing them as i don't want a tug from the police any idea how they come out ?

the light from them are blue while the rest are original defiantly an mot failure there id sooner have them original anyway i only got the car last week and they were already fitted

Pete..........

Anyone have any idea on how to remove the hid lights also i cant see how to change any of the bulbs anyway do you have to remove the headlight to get at the bulbs or is there another way ?

Pete.......

There have been long discussions on the forum about replacing front light bulbs on the Stilo.

Some people have managed to replace them in without removing the headlamps, some remove the bumper and headlamps.

There are several methods described including removing the battery, battery box, wheel arch liners, windscreen washer bottle etc. I always remove the bumper and headlamps.

Hi Davren

Thank you for that, i think maybe removing the battery box and headlamp washer bottle is easier but is there much involved in removing the bumper?? looks a nightmare of a job however you look at it.

This is my first fiat and i don't know much about them as yet but im eager to learn about them its a nice car i just need to know more about it ive had many cars over the years but never owned a Fiat and ive been driving for about 40 years now :D

As it goes i went to my local MOT station yesterday and he looked at my car and said as long as the HID lights are are aimed right there,s no problem and they are not illegal all the same i think ill have him check the alignment to make sure

Pete........

Hi there again Davren
